Year of the Priest: Military

Excerpts from a great photo essay on military chaplains, coming to us via the Crescat, who loves to celebrate the manly priests:Catholic military chaplain Cpt. Carl Subler on March 5 at a small U.S. combat outpost in Sha-Wali-Kot in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan (See the whole inspiring thing hereAll found via New AdventRelated: The Stuff Priests are Made Of … [Read more...]

The Ball & the Cross & the Bread

[In Chesterton's novel The Ball and the Cross, old Turnbull, the atheist] starts falling in love with a young Catholic woman named Madeleine. . . she finally talks to him not only about his duel, but about the sacraments:He advanced upon Madeleine with flaming eyes, and almost took her by the two shoulders. "I do not love God," he cried, . . . "I do not want to find Him; I do not think he is there to be found. I must burst up the show; I must and will say everything. You are the happiest … [Read more...]

Oprah, Sisters of Mary, Haiti & Random Stuff -UPDATED

Sisters after making Perpetual ProfessionI was busy with other work this morning, and so Thomas Peters beat me to it, and he has exclusive pics, darn him! Our friends the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist -about whom I have written many times, most recently in this vocations update will be featured on the Oprah Winfrey show, (tentatively scheduled for February 9). Apparently Oprah's crew was in Ann Arbor yesterday, filming on the premises and talking to some sisters, and … [Read more...]

"You will always have this…"

A Puffy-Eye'd Crybaby with Monkey FaceInside Catholic is reposting something I'd forgotten that I'd written, and upon re-reading, I think it's worth recommending to you:I knelt at my seat, thanking and welcoming Jesus, as I'd been taught, and suddenly I was in the grip of something I had never felt before -- an indescribable sweetness, an overwhelming sense of . . . what, exactly? I could not have then articulated the ringing sense, deep within myself, of "holy, holy, holy" like the peal of … [Read more...]

Funk, Priesthood, Military & Jobs – UPDATED

I know that header could describe the state of the whole nation, right now; we're in a funk. But really, I am simply down with a bit of a fever/sore throat/immune system thing, and shivers. So I am taking it easy today.Woke up with this on my mind, though: "someone's son has to be the priest; someone's child must be the soldier, and the cop." I have no idea why that was with me. When my kids were growing up my husband and I always made it clear that whatever would make them happy … [Read more...]

Prayer is ruining me for blogging…

I love my oratory. It's so nice, so restful, so mine. Going there to pray every day ("going there;" it's on the other side of my desk) just...shapes the whole day.But it's really playing hell with my blogging and the direction of the blog.I mean, here's my morning: I shower, get dressed, wrap the towel around my wet head (hey, it's a handy headcoving!) and then go to my oratory. I light tea candles, one before each Icon, one before the Crucifix, one before my little pewter statues. … [Read more...]

Flowers Before His Majesty!

Come, let us sing to the Lord and shout with joy to the Rock who saves us. Let us approach him with praise and thanksgiving and sing joyful songs to the Lord.Is that not a wonderful picture? Shamelessly cribbed from The Crescat (where Carolina Cannonball has a knack of finding great photos and works of art) - we see the child joyfully strewing the path with flowers by the handful and with abandon. She is fearless and self-possessed; the beloved daughter of the King who follows, splendid in … [Read more...]

"His love is so strong…"

In the comments section here, Joseph Marshall says I am being prodded to write about my experiences on retreat.I suspect that is correct, but I don't think it's time yet. I'll know when it's time because I'll be writing it, unable to resist. For now, I am still processing it all.I'm having difficulty articulating it because the Love -it was blinding, mesmerizing, all-encompassing, warm, delightful- I still don't have the words. Last night I wrote to my Li'l Bro Thom, "I still have a … [Read more...]

"It is consummated."

"Everything" is about nothing. Everything ended with the sacrifice of the Lamb. All is consummated. We are forever and always at the Last Supper, at the Crucifixion, at the Resurrection. Time ended with the tearing of the veil and the rolling back of the stone. The rest is illusion and catching up. There is nothing to be afraid of.I awoke from a sound sleep with that repeating in my head, this morning, and grabbed a pen and wrote it down.I kind of like it.I'm not sure what it all means, … [Read more...]
