The Game: Who Goes Nazi?

Bookworm passed this on via email and I thought it was pretty fascinating: a Harper's piece from August of 1941, written by Dorothy Thompson, Who Goes Nazi?It is an interesting and somewhat macabre parlor game to play at a large gathering of one’s acquaintances: to speculate who in a showdown would go Nazi. By now, I think I know. I have gone through the experience many times–in Germany, in Austria, and in France. I have come to know the types: the born Nazis, the Nazis whom democracy itself … [Read more...]

Immigration & the Storm Next Time

Chapel at Green-Wood Cemetery, BrooklynLast week, I was in Brooklyn taping a few episodes of In the Arena, and one of the drivers, taking a route that brought us past The Green-Wood Cemetery, reminisced about Park Slope, where he had lived all his life."We were working class, then. Our fathers were train conductors and shoe salesmen. No, we'd never be able to afford to live here. We'd cut through Prospect Park to Ebbets Field to watch the Dodgers. In the summer, they'd close off four … [Read more...]

Obama: "Not talking…is ridiculous"

My readers have better memories than I do. Today, I got this in the mail from an reader who asks to be identified as "A Product of Pittsburgh Steelworkers":I had written to you before the election about how then Candidate Obama would no longer talk to a television station in Florida because he didn't like some of the questions they asked Joe Biden. See your article Obama: Yes to Iran, No to WFTV from October 2008.But even I would never have imagined that he would carry this over to an … [Read more...]

"The stuff priests are made of…" UPDATED

Wow, a great photo via the Crescat, who recounts the story she found here and marvels at "the stuff priests are made of":4 June 1962. Navy chaplain Luis Padillo was giving last rites to dying soldiers as sniper fire surrounded him. A wounded soldier pulled himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Hector Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture. [See all pi … [Read more...]

10 Questions WH Press Corps left unasked

From the Dept. of Everyday He Is On TV:Yesterday's O-presser was a little interesting. The White House seems to be doing what I predicted the other day; they're suggesting that the so-so Cairo speech was the impetus for the popular uprising in Iran. Funny how that worked out. When the president finally figured out what was the right side to be on, then it was the side he'd always vociferously been on, and in fact, he caused the whole thing to happen. But the Weenee diplomacy is still … [Read more...]

Podcast; Office for the Dead (for Iran)

As I explain in the podcast, after turning alternative media for lack of MSM coverage, and reading tons of material on Iran, and listening to the president's remarks, and reading Twittered Tweets from people in Iran trying to get information and images out of that country, I was already inclined to pray for the people of Iran. Then, after seeing a few horrific videos, and one awful picture (very graphic, you are warned), I have decided to pray the Office for the Dead, for those losing their … [Read more...]
