Chick-fil-A: if you’re not sure, this is how fascism works – UPDATED AGAIN

Over at Facebook, I noticed a picture of Kermit and Miss Piggy marrying, with a caption about Chick-fil-A*. I can't seem to find it, now -- perhaps the person who posted it deleted it. I confess, haven't been following this story at all. But after the Muppets picture, I saw someone ranting about Chick-fil-A being denied business licenses because they were "against gay marriage." At that point, I posted to Facebook, "Whether these Chick-fil-A people support gay marriage or not, are … [Read more...]

Kim Jong Il is Dead; New Tyrants Come

While you were sleeping our already-roiling world took another hit to its tenuous stability: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced. Mr Kim, who has led the communist nation since the death of his father in 1994, died on a train while visiting an area outside the capital, the announcement said. He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for months. Pyongyang described his son Kim Jong-un as the "great successor" … [Read more...]

Shahbaz Bhatti; free speech martyr – UPDATES

Via Allahpundit, who called the video "haunting": Washington Post coverage here. Writes Margaret Cabaniss at Inside Catholic: Last month I blogged about Shahbaz Bhatti, the Catholic politician in Pakistan who had been courageously speaking out against the anti-blasphemy laws in that country, even in the face of death threats. "I follow the principles of my conscience, and I am ready to die and sacrifice my life for the principles I believe,” he said at the time. Horribly, … [Read more...]

Juan Williams: Fired for Doubting – UPDATED

(Graphic via Ed Driscoll, who has a good roundup) I wonder if it was smart of NPR to--12 days out from an election where leftism is headed for a defeat of rejection--re-inforce the perception that both liberalism and the media are out of control; that they have utterly cast off their former roles as champions of free speech and free thought, in favor of compulsory conformity. On consideration, I (along with Andrew Malcolm) say, no...not smart. Catastrophically not smart. My first thought … [Read more...]

The Clampdown; Shirley Sherrod & Ken Howell – UPDATED

Here we have the presentment of two job losses: Shirley Sherrod gives a speech; within the speech she indulges in a bit of roundaboutation, saying some things that seemed offensive, until the larger context was understood. Because the embrasure of "politically correct speech" has encouraged reactionary hyper-vigilance as to words, sentences or modes of reasoning that might steer too close to the movable line known as "hate," Sherrod's edited remarks were immediately received as such and … [Read more...]

The Breitbart Sherrod Tape – UPDATE

Glenn Reynolds linked to this piece at Hot Air where Ed Morrissey writes: Andrew Breitbart announced that he would publish at least one video of the NAACP itself cheering racism. Breitbart delivers on that promise today at Big Government, showing USDA official Shirley Sherrod explain to an appreciative NAACP audience in July 2009 how she deliberately withheld information from a white farmer in Georgia trying to save his land and his business: The Breitbart piece is here, and yes, the … [Read more...]

Dancing at Auschwitz

The notation at YouTube reads: On a recent trip to Europe, a family of three generations (a Holocaust survivor, his daughter and his grandchildren) dance to Gloria Gaynor's pop song - 'I Will Survive' at concentration camps and memorials throughout Europe. This clip was first edited with the help of my friend Pisithpong Siraphisit who runs Compeung Art Village, Chiang Mai, Thailand. This dance is a tribute to the tenacity of the human spirit and a celebration of life. Despite the systematic … [Read more...]

It's FINE if law bans books – UPDATED

"...because the government won't really enforce it!" Thus spaketh...Supreme Court Nominee Elena Kagan? Actually, what she says is, essentially, it's alright to create laws banning books, because the government has never YET enforced such a law. Okay, this is the Dean of Harvard Law School, and another one of the "brightest people" in the country with whom Obama seems to deal with, exclusively. I am not a lawyer; I am not Ivy-Educated, and I think this is one of the most breathtakingly … [Read more...]

Credit where it's due

I can't embed the video, but credit where it's due, I give Nancy Pelosi props for hanging in there, allowing people to have their say, and not running away. When I see a politician do that, I am appreciative. I liked it when Bush did it, and I like it now. The free expression of political opinion and disagreement is so fundamental to America, that I will always appreciate a politician who manages to hang in there, although they ought never put themselves in danger. Pelosi rightly judged, … [Read more...]

Obama & the Press: Voices Carry – POLL

Noting that the press seems torn between being justifiably angry at President Obama for his dismissive attitude toward them (and his disinterest in press conferences and "transparencies") and their instinct to lay down, roll over and let him rub their bellies while they pant, Allahpundit remarks: this relationship is the definition of co-dependency, isn’t it? Well, yes, we've pretty much established that the White House press corps and most of the mainstream media are the well-paid … [Read more...]
