Oh, nuts! Obama Speech Reax

I have not one, not two but three things I have to start writing for various deadlines, so I'm going to offer you a quick look-around from my email and a few sites and then tip the hat and ride off into the sunset for most of the day, pardners. Obama was going to bring "his own plan" on healthcare to the Congress yesterday, wasn't that the pre-speech meme? "This is the momentism!": Again with the Broadwayesque-Bombast. Every Obama speech is "the moment." Say, isn't that the big song from … [Read more...]

Clearing out the tab

I've got some deadlines to meet and a project I'd like to get started, so I need to stop futzing around, reading news and blogs and get to it. Here is what's been cluttering up my tab-bar for the last day or so - it's a bit of a jumble, sorry: Malta, shamelessly cribbed from Crescat Beautiful Malta! Where Doug Kmiec is the new US Ambassador after what Dan Gilgoff describes as a "strange religious/political" swearing in. Kmiec is the Catholic former Reagan WH Legal Counsel who campaigned … [Read more...]

The Leadership Void; we need St. Benedict – UPDATED

Deacon Greg sent this my way, noting, "this is extraordinary, and the piece mentions you, too!" Such a star, I am! What is "extraordinary" is the lengthy post Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley put up in his blog, addressing the criticism he has received for presiding (in a very minimalist way, it must be said) at the Funeral Mass of Sen. Ted Kennedy. For the record, I wasn't one of those suggesting Kennedy should not have a Catholic funeral; my gripe was with the sanctification of the man by … [Read more...]

Obamacare & the Insistent Vector of Love -UPDATED

When Sarah Palin talked about the “death panel” provisions residing within the Obamacare bill she was excoriated in the press and by the left for her inelegant and un-nuanced language, and –because she is the left’s Emmanuel Goldstein-in-training – for also being stupid and wrong, and a hick. Meanwhile, the Senate Finance Committee quietly scrapped the provision to which Palin was referring. No, the words “death panel” had never existed in the bill, but Palin neatly identified … [Read more...]

The Pinnacle: slim, sharp & lonely

Catching up on all the stories since I have been away and I must have missed this one when it broke - the header: Democrat: Republicans hate ObamaCare because they’re racists. Also, Castro’s a genius. The Democrat is Rep. Diane Watson (D-California). Watson is both African-American and female, so she is speaking from the fake ledge of "absolute moral authority" which was once the province of Cindy Sheehan until she stopped being a useful bat for to beat around the Bush, with. From … [Read more...]

"The stuff priests are made of…" UPDATED

Wow, a great photo via the Crescat, who recounts the story she found here and marvels at "the stuff priests are made of": 4 June 1962. Navy chaplain Luis Padillo was giving last rites to dying soldiers as sniper fire surrounded him. A wounded soldier pulled himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Hector Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture. [See all … [Read more...]

Nibbling at News & Adoring

Did I happen to mention that things are absurdly busy around here? I'm having a great deal of difficulty keeping up. I want very much to respond to Rick, and his comments in this thread, and I also have other things I want to write, including a review of a terrific book you need to buy, but today is going to be "one of those days" - not least because I have an opportunity to go to Adoration this afternoon and I won't miss it, but it will eat up lots of hours. I have to say that since my … [Read more...]

Equality of Opportunity or of Outcome?

Let's look some more at this piece by Jillian Bandes, on Obama's new "Chief Diversity Officer," Mark Lloyd. I was a bit snarky yesterday when I wrote of this newly-created office: Does it seem to you that the Obama administration makes up titles and offices the way Bluto made up new names for Animal House Pledges? “You’ll be…the Chief Diversity Officer!” “Why?” “Why the hell not?” It certainly does seem that the Obama administration is interested in creating a million … [Read more...]

Your MUST READ on Healthcare

David Goldhill has done all of us a tremendous service with his 10,000 word article in The Atlantic Online. Yes, it's long, but it's thoughtful and true and something that really must be read. I had linked to it as an update, here, but decided that it really needs to be promoted, disseminated and discussed, and not relegated to an "update" that might be missed. Goldhill is a Democrat who looks at the healthcare not as a wonk or a partisan, but from the perspective of a businessman who has … [Read more...]

Klavan, "Health" Panels & Goldsteins – UPDATED

I'm still in a retreat after-glow that has me only half attending to the world around me, and I am still pushing politics away in the manner of a King's daughter being offered boiled tripe: "- ewww, away with that!" But this piece by Andrew Klavan floated across my email and by the second paragraph I wished I'd written it. It needs a deft touch, though, and can't you just see the movie version? ...the logic of this moment was inevitable. Once government got its fingers on the health-care … [Read more...]

Same Old America; "Freedom & Opportunity"

I am on monastic retreat until the weekend, and have scheduled two reposts each day of pieces that some may not have read before. Comments will be off until I return. You might like peeking into last year's Online Retreat * * * Originally posted in December of 2007, and rather poignant, given the tenor of the times. So, I had a doctor's appointment this morning - or I thought I did. I made it to the 11AM appointment to discover that it was really a 1PM appointment, and it was for … [Read more...]

Sebelius cheers thugs & a GREAT photo essay

There is offensive language on this video, so if that bothers you, you are warned. To my way of thinking the physical violence is more offensive: Source: The indispensable Hot Air The day after the attack on a fellow selling buttons and "Don't Tread on Me" flags (and which immediately preceded this event), Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius held a conference call to the SEIU, during which she greeted her union "brothers and sisters" and said "keep doing what you're doing!" Culture of … [Read more...]

"Shut Up," he explained – UPDATED

Source <center Writes Allahpundit: "It’s practically a taunt." Indeed, I find it breathtaking. The man is supposed to be the leader of the country, the president of ALL the people, not just the ones who agree with him, and he's basically over half the nation to just shut up and fall in line. In fact, the president and his White House have been so irresponsible this week, what with their, "punch back twice as hard" nonsense (good going, there, chief) and so blatantly authoritarian with … [Read more...]

Protesting with Detachment, MLK-style -UPDATED

Early yesterday evening, I wrote: You know who could put a stop to the bad feelings arising in this country? President Obama, who is supposed to be the leadership. Just as Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton backed off when they realized America was not into having their Healthcare taken over by the government, Obama could say, “you know, I’m moving kind of fast here, maybe we’ll shelve this for a while and concentrate more on putting people back to work, which is urgent.” Such a move … [Read more...]
