To Cover or Not to Cover the head?

Source*We explored the subject of women covering their heads at prayer and Mass a while back, and it was one of the hottest topics we've ever debated here.I am still covering, and increasingly comfortable doing so; I find that covering for mass has also made me more inclined to dress a bit more becomingly for mass. Nothing fancy (I am incapable of "fancy") but I am dressing with a "Sunday Best" mindset, now. I even bought a skirt!I'm also increasingly comfortable with the world's tiniest … [Read more...]

Prayer is ruining me for blogging…

SourcebookI love my oratory. It's so nice, so restful, so mine. Going there to pray every day ("going there;" it's on the other side of my desk) just...shapes the whole day.But it's really playing hell with my blogging and the direction of the blog.I mean, here's my morning: I shower, get dressed, wrap the towel around my wet head (hey, it's a handy headcoving!) and then go to my oratory. I light tea candles, one before each Icon, one before the Crucifix, one before my little pewter … [Read more...]

Dowd: Which are miserable nuns? – UPDATED

Dominican Nuns having funSo many people have written so well about Maureen Dowd's recent display of sublime ignorance on the subject of nuns and the oppressive, patriarchal church that has oppressed them and kept them down encouraged them to do and be and lead, teach, advise and build for lo these 2000 years that I really did not feel a need to comment. After all, Archbishop Timothy Dolan said it so well, in a letter to the NY Times, which they naturally declined to print, as he called Dowd … [Read more...]

The World’s Tiniest Hair Shirt…

Brown ScapularMy husband was noticed a brown cord peeking out from the neckline of my shirt and asked, "what's that?"Oops. Caught. "It's a brown scapular," I admitted."That's like, hardcore fanatical Catholic stuff, isn't it," he asked. "When did you start wearing that?"He wasn't being critical, exactly. My husband is a tolerant sort, and if a person wants to practice a lot of devotions that he doesn't feel particularly called to, that's alright by him. But he did seem a … [Read more...]

Oh…my! Hmmm. Lovely.

Carolina Cannonball is one of my faves and The Crescat is always a fun stop. And you know, since we've been talking headcoverings on and off for the past few weeks, you will probably want to go look at her pictures of Princess Grace and Jackie Kennedy and others wearing lace mantillas because Miss Cannonball has decided that, since last week was "tonsure week", this week we'd see the women's head-coverings.But all of that is nothing to me. I don't care, I don't care. Yes, the mantillas are … [Read more...]

Crucifix on my Oratory

One of these days, I will learn how to take a picture out of a digital camera (or my phone) and post a picture of my Oratory for you.Suffice to say it is makeshift. I have a cushion for sitting or kneeling (it's big). I've pushed a glass-topped credenza to the wall, leaned four Icons against it, and I have these solid brass angel/candleholders I picked up for cheap some years ago at an antique shop. Tealight candles scattered among a few smaller Icons - it's very restful and very simple, … [Read more...]

The Great Head-Covering Experiment

After the huge amount of interest and commentary generated by my musings on wearing a head-covering to church, I thought I would give an update! No, I did not look this prettySo, yesterday, I went to mass and I DID obey the nagging, nudging urge I've had to cover my head. But I did not use the black, veil-y scarf I'd been considering. Instead, heeding all the good advice so many had left here (or emailed), I chose a scarf that matched my blouse and wore it as a scarf, pausing before … [Read more...]

Your thoughts on headcoverings? UPDATED

Head-covered woman, pretty in pink, shamelessly cribbed from this Evangelical siteTaking a break from the writing, (which is not going well, because it's the first stirrings of Autumn, here in NY and I want to be outside!) I figured I'll talk about something that's been in my head for a while, and that is the question of whether I should cover it, while at prayer, and especially at Mass.Cover my head, I mean.I started wondering about this last winter, when I would go to Adoration and … [Read more...]
