Isn’t it Shocking, How People Dress for Mass?

It's a subject we can't get enough of. Deacon Greg's piece on the issue, from several years ago, always gets resurrected in summer, like a case of hay-fever.As that's true, it's not surprising that I'm still getting email and social media reaction to last week's response to Bishop Tobin's self-admitted 'rant' about the “hirsute flabmeisters” who populate Mass along with their children.Amid the commentary, someone put a blogpiece before my eyes that I thought really was the definitive dis … [Read more...]

To Cover or Not to Cover the head?

We explored the subject of women covering their heads at prayer and Mass a while back, and it was one of the hottest topics we've ever debated here.I am still covering, and increasingly comfortable doing so; I find that covering for mass has also made me more inclined to dress a bit more becomingly for mass. Nothing fancy (I am incapable of "fancy") but I am dressing with a "Sunday Best" mindset, now. I even bought a skirt!I'm also increasingly comfortable with the world's tiniest hair … [Read more...]

Prayer is ruining me for blogging…

I love my oratory. It's so nice, so restful, so mine. Going there to pray every day ("going there;" it's on the other side of my desk) just...shapes the whole day.But it's really playing hell with my blogging and the direction of the blog.I mean, here's my morning: I shower, get dressed, wrap the towel around my wet head (hey, it's a handy headcoving!) and then go to my oratory. I light tea candles, one before each Icon, one before the Crucifix, one before my little pewter statues. … [Read more...]

Crucifix on my Oratory

One of these days, I will learn how to take a picture out of a digital camera (or my phone) and post a picture of my Oratory for you.Suffice to say it is makeshift. I have a cushion for sitting or kneeling (it's big). I've pushed a glass-topped credenza to the wall, leaned four Icons against it, and I have these solid brass angel/candleholders I picked up for cheap some years ago at an antique shop. Tealight candles scattered among a few smaller Icons - it's very restful and very simple, … [Read more...]

The Great Head-Covering Experiment

After the huge amount of interest and commentary generated by my musings on wearing a head-covering to church, I thought I would give an update! No, I did not look this prettySo, yesterday, I went to mass and I DID obey the nagging, nudging urge I've had to cover my head. But I did not use the black, veil-y scarf I'd been considering. Instead, heeding all the good advice so many had left here (or emailed), I chose a scarf that matched my blouse and wore it as a scarf, pausing before … [Read more...]

Your thoughts on headcoverings? UPDATED

The Spanish fan. Signed HaynesWilliams/Public Domain

Taking a break from the writing, (which is not going well, because it's the first stirrings of Autumn, here in NY and I want to be outside!) I figured I'll talk about something that's been in my head for a while, and that is the question of whether I should cover it, while at prayer, and especially at Mass.Cover my head, I mean.I started wondering about this last winter, when I would go to Adoration and find myself getting a bit chilled in the stillness, and so I would put my jacket hood … [Read more...]
