Abortion, the Sisters of Life & Hope – UPDATES

My friend Tony Rossi has had the opportunity to interview one of the foundresses of the Sisters of Life, Mother Agnes Mary Donovan, for The Christophers Closeup, and it's really rather wonderful and inspiring:Founded after New York’s Cardinal John O’Connor visited the Dachau concentration camp and vowed to protect the dignity of every human life, the Sisters of Life provide a safe haven for women who experience an unplanned pregnancy and aren’t sure what to do. Mother Agnes Mary Donovan tells … [Read more...]

'In the midst of life, we are in death…"

And in the midst of death, we are in life.Over at Summit, NJ, the Dominican Nuns of Our Lady of the Rosary Monastery are in life and death, all the time. You can't spend your days processing in and out of choir seven times a day to join the Angels in adoration and praise, without getting a seriously wholistic view of it all. But this week, especially, we see the literal life-in-death paradox (which, really, is true in all our lives) at work. This past weekend saw the nuns celebrating the … [Read more...]

Sisters on Oprah – UPDATED

Just finished watching the Oprah Winfrey show featuring the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and I thought it was really excellent. I missed the very beginning, so I don't know if she did the Geisha feature, as well, but the segment with the sisters was really, very impressive. The sisters were well-spoken, intelligent, funny, good-natured and extremely forthright about their lives, and both Lisa Ling and Winfrey seemed to genuinely appreciate their comments on life, … [Read more...]

Dominican Sisters on Oprah

Novices in chapel, observed by Oprah's crewThe Dominican Sisters of Mary will be featured on Oprah Winfrey's show tomorrow, and the gals were kind enough to send along an exclusive picture from the crew's visit to their Ann Arbor Motherhouse. They have more pictures here.A peek at her teaser for the Tuesday show (H/T the Deac) indicates that the Sisters will share the hour with a look at the "the word's only Western Geisha." One serves God and thereby all of humanity, one serves a single … [Read more...]

More Benedictines

Abbey of St. WalburgaOver at St. Walburga's Abbey, in Virginia Dale, Colorado, they are celebrating the entrance of another young woman into their novitiate, where she was clothed in the Benedictine Habit. They have some great pictures of their joyful new novice, Sr. Kathryn. Nuns in this community take their new names-in-religion upon first vows.I am struck, though, by the wonderful talk given pre-clothing by the Abbess, Mother Maria-Michael, who said:A vocation isn’t something we d … [Read more...]

Vocation Awareness Week!

The first and most important thing about any man is his vision, his conception of existence. Upon this depends whether he will paint a gorgeous picture or a sad one. Upon this also depends whether he will paint a sad picture or merely jump over London Bridge. -- G.K. ChestertonI got a sweet email last week from one of the Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, wondering if, in honor of Vocation Awareness Week, I could give a little publicity to their upcoming Vocation Discernment Retreat. … [Read more...]
