October 14; Morning Prayer

It's a tired-sounding morning prayer, with no chanting, not even the canticles. Sorry. I recorded this in the wee small hours after staying up late, reading. Also, the mic had a little hum today - I don't know if I had it placed badly, so I suggest you keep the volume down, or it will sound very pipe-y. And no one wants a pipe-y morning prayer.I'm saving up for new equipment, I promise. I figure "unless the Lord build the house...etc" so if He wants it, He'll provide. And if not...he'll … [Read more...]

Very Late Vespers!

If you're in NY, you might think it's too late to say Vespers, but it's never too late. Join yourselves in prayer with our brothers and sisters currently praying the hour in Hawaii!Just as it's always pub-time, somewhere, it's always time for the Liturgy of the Hours, somewhere, too. Since time and space are constructs, transcend them. Don't fret about the clock!I read a small snippet, before beginning the liturgy, and forgot to mention the other side of the notion that God manifests … [Read more...]

Podcast late: Almost burned down house!

I wrote here, that I would be recording a podcast of Vespers in 'about an hour.'Well, Vespers will be late. They're coming, just as soon as I write this and my hands stop shaking. Here's the deal: I'm fasting. No eating between meals, only two meals a day, yadda yadda, by the time supper comes around, yer girl is pretty hungry, a little lightheaded and goofy. My husband is having a "guys night out" which I encouraged. Elder Son is distracted. So, I decided I would order out - a pasta … [Read more...]

Vespers Podcast: Am I still fasting?

Someone emailed asking, "are you still" praying and fasting?Yes, I am. But remember - I'm not praying for a "win;" I'm praying that for the good of the country. Since my mind is not God's I have no idea, taking the long view of things, what that might mean. But I trust the longview. I know that things have a way of being "written straight with crooked letters."I’m thinking we’re in the middle of a mystery, that this whole, odd, unpredictable and too-long election season has been run alo … [Read more...]

Mornings are for Prayer & Study

That's actually a Dominican in the picture, but "ora et labora" is the motto of the Benedictine: Pray and Work. And study. Books are the Benedictine lifeblood.I promised myself a while back that I would take mornings to study, specifically to read books on anything but what is going on around us, although very often what I'm reading has its resonances in the day, as well, and no, I don't strictly mean scripture, but there's that, too.It is good to be quiet. In fact, it is necessary. I … [Read more...]

Morning Prayer; St. Francis of Assisi

Everybody loves him! Even the pagans want to claim him! But he was a lot more complicated than the statue/birdfeeders let on.I have the good fortune of knowing a number of Franciscans, including a dear cousin who is a Capuchin, and they are all busy people of very good humor - a little sweet and a little tart; most of them live with an outlook that is pragmatic but also very supernatural. It is no surprise that God would go to a Franciscan Nun, Mother Angelica, and goad her into building … [Read more...]

Vespers Oct 02; The Guardian Angels

Today I have been literally bombarded with emails - so much so that I've read barely nothing in the news. One emailed question I got several times today was "are you really praying and fasting? If you are, maybe I will too..."Yes, I am. I'm praying and fasting "that wisdom and light be brought to guide our nation in this election period, and that Thy will be done..." whatever that ends up being. I was a little appalled to get one missive from a lady who said she was Christian but was … [Read more...]

Morning Prayer October 01

Sorry to say there are a few small mistakes in this podcast, the most glaring of which is that I said I would provide the page directives and read the small bio of St. Therese in the breviary and then proceeded to accidentally cut all of that out during the edit, also, I am dealing with a sore throat and choked my way through the third psalm...apologies.Here's the podcast for morning prayer. While this is the feastday of Therese of Lisieux, we're not praying the Office of Virgins or the … [Read more...]
