RFK, MLK, Oakland, Race & Us

RKF, MLK Landmark for Peace MemorialA few days ago I linked to a piece by J. Peter Nixon and his thoughts and actions in anticipation of a trial verdict toward which a few hundred agitators had been encouraging civil unrest.Having remained in Oakland that night, choosing to pray at a Cathedral rather than flee, Nixon concluded his thoughts thusly:I wonder, in retrospect, what would have happened if enough of us had stayed, if we had continued that ministry of non-violent presence, if we … [Read more...]

A Saint Grows in Brooklyn?

A great pleasure of doing In the Arena for the Diocese of Brooklyn as been getting to know Msgr. Kieran Harrington, the Vicar of Communications for the Diocese. New Evangelization Television, which produces, among other things, the only Catholic nightly news broadcast in the country, (Deacon Greg Kandra is its busy News Director) is one of Msgr. Harrington's concerns. Why do I bring him up? Well, it's 2:24 AM, and I am oddly tickled that one Monsignor has tipped me off to this this … [Read more...]

What's wrong with Jaden Smith? Nothing

Having enjoyed Jaden Smith's performance in The Pursuit of Happyness, (a film I liked very much) but uninterested in his current flick, The Karate Kid I had somehow missed the pop-controversy over whether or not young Jaden is a likable kid, or a brat.He seems quite alright, to me. In fact, the kid seems better than alright; he may be that Hollywood creature so rarely-seen-in-public, the product of a happy childhood. Jaden Smith strikes me as an intelligent and mannerly kid who spends the … [Read more...]

Is this racist? Unprofessional? Ignorant? -UPDATED

The New Republic's James Gardner has taken a look at the drawings for the George W. Bush Presidential Library, and while the knee-jerk negativity is adolescent and predictable, it ends up on a rather bizarre note, for a grown-up, professional publication. We begin with the obligatory, "the last Democrat's library is better," sniff:There is a hard-edged and unapologetic modernity to the Clinton Library . . . Though some (including Clinton himself) have compared this long and rectangular … [Read more...]

How much does Contessa Brewer earn? UPDATED

Because she makes some really egregious mistakes over there at MSNBC (one of the White House Designated "Real" News Channels), so I want to know.I mean, during the summer, Brewer did some primo race-baiting as she (and others at White-House-Approved-and Met-With) MSNBC went out of their way to hide the race of a videotaped, gun-carrying tea-partier (ahem, he was African American) in order to suggest that the rally attendees were all a bunch of ignorant white racists who were probably … [Read more...]

Wilson Wrong, Obama did not lie!

"Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don't simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken," Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. "That's why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.Mr. Obama added, "If anything, this debate underscores … [Read more...]

I believe Obama rejects Carter's charge – UPDATED

In a post below, I noted a tweet from CBS' Mark Knoller:Rejecting Jimmy Carter analysis, WH spksmn Gibbs says Pres. Obama does not blv that criticism of him comes based on the color of his skin.I twittered back: I believe this constant cry of racism is probably disheartening and distasteful to Obama. Perhaps he should say something. To which Knoller replied: i'm sure he would if asked since a former US pres made the comment.Whether a president who sees his country coming to a full rolling … [Read more...]

Hey, whatever happened to Hillary, anyway? -UPDATED

“I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration, somehow you’re not patriotic, and we should stand up and say, ‘WE ARE AMERICANS AND WE HAVE A RIGHT TO DEBATE AND DISAGREE WITH ANY ADMINISTRATION!’”Do you think we could get Hillary to re-record that, and just change the words "not patriotic" to "a racist"?Meanwhile, here is Rep. Maxine Waters, who earlier this year got herself all worked up about the evil people with access to private jets, … [Read more...]

Althouse, Dowd & the Toxic Card of Racism – UPDATED

Legal Insurrection:The increasingly hysterical use of the the race card by liberal columnists, bloggers and politicians reflects the last gasps of people who, being unable to win an argument on the merits, seek to end the argument. While the false accusation of racism is not a new tactic, it has been refined by Obama supporters into a toxic powder which is causing damage to the social fabric of the country by artificially injecting race into every political issue.. . . .The effect of these … [Read more...]
