Macaroni and Cheese-a-palooza

Buster is visiting from college for a few days and when I asked if there was anything special he wanted me to cook he cocked the eyebrow and said, "it's Lent. Friday is coming. What else but Macaroni and Cheese?"In our family, mac and cheese is a pretty simple affair, but people go mad for it; a few weeks ago the kids had a party here and the buffet menu had to include mac & cheese, which was the first tray to empty. What's lovely about this is it is creamy, and you can add anything … [Read more...]

Fridays in Lent

Meatless. We get into the Lenten fare. Fish. Beans and Macaroni (my Elder Son relishes the "pastafazoole"). Grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup! Irish Soda Bread! (A slightly different recipe here). And we get together to pray The Way of the CrossJesus Meets His Mother, shamelessly cribbed from Deacon GregDeacon Greg writes about how his parish does this. The Way of the Cross is a challenging and exhilarating devotion. It is sad and mournful. And it makes the knees ache as … [Read more...]

Palate Cleanser: Eat a Sea Kitten!

The world is nuts. The country is nuts. The government is nuts. So, Kim at Musing Minds is reminding everyone about International Eat A Tasty Animal for PETA Day. That would be this March 15.Writes Kim: With PETA’s latest lame attempt at trying to “guilt” us into becoming vegans, I think that this year’s IEATAPETA day should be devoted to “Sea Kittens” of all kinds. PETA is also trying to get schools with names like Whitefish and Spearfish to rename themselves Sea Kitten…Let’s have Fish a … [Read more...]

Got no oomph, sorry

Sorry so quiet today; I actually have a bunch of tabs all lined up of things I want to link to or talk about, but this was one of those days where the running around started early and hasn't really stopped yet. There's a lot going on - including a "project" I am seriously in need of sitting down and finishing before Lent, which will come all-too-quickly, as long as I am not ready. That's how it works, right? If you're not ready, it flies in; if you're all set and anticipating, time … [Read more...]

Those Oreo Truffles: Recipe here. In answer to an email, no they are not too rich, and yes, they taste like truffles, not Oreos. If you don't believe me, here is a note from Reader Ellen:I was intrigued enough to try it, though, and I now join the raving masses who love them! I took them to my department’s Christmas lunch today, and had multiple requests for the recipe. Next time I make them, I’m adding Grand Marnier! The Italian Rainbow Cookies: Sorry they're a little difficult to find. … [Read more...]

Descending into Thanksgiving

Well, it's pedal to the metal time around here. Buster is home from college and already blowing the saxophone while his brother wrestles with a computer problem. The dog is throwing up. I still have to go shopping for a few items now that I have chosen my veggie entrees from some of the suggestions made below and at Ace's - yay, my menu is finally complete! I've added an asparagus and a green-bean dish to the list, and have decided to make Pianogirl's Incredibly Delicious Pumpkin Bread … [Read more...]

Blegging a Veggie recipe – UPDATED

My dear MIL is doing Thanksgiving, but I offered to take some of the load off her hands by making all the veggies.Only trouble is I'm sort of out of ideas. I'm making the mashed turnips w/ carrots, and the sweet potato pie, and the usual broccoli w/ garlic, (and MIL is making the artichokes because I never make them right) but I need at least two more veggies or I'll have failed in the task and let the family down.So...creamed spinach more?Any ideas for veggies out there? … [Read more...]
