Obama & the Fishermen UPDATED

Via Instapundit, Ed Morrissey explains why the fishermen are mad at Obama:The White House and Lubchenco want an end to private commercial fishing and have taken steps to eliminate “freelancing,” for lack of a better term. Instead, they want to close the fisheries into “commodities markets” where the government essentially licenses fishermen and then allocates the catch based on a predetermined distribution plan. The “commodities markets” will kill many fishing-based jobs and essentially turn … [Read more...]

Podhoretz Makes My Point – UPDATED

NYPost Opinion Photo/Jeff DayYesterday, I wrote here that if we had not so utterly failed in rebuilding at Ground Zero, the Cordoba House, Islamic Cultural Center/Mosque, don't-call-it-a-mosque-Park51 currently occupying our thoughts would not have been an issue, at all:In a near-decade that “something” could have taken the form of a park, or a memorial, or a glistening new tower, and the construction of a mosque two blocks thence would have been nothing more than a reinforcement of the not … [Read more...]

Hating All Our Bright Tomorrows – UPDATED

State Opera House, ViennaMy latest weekly column is up on the homepage. Today, we discuss the self-loathing which is killing Europe and slowly taking hold in America, as well:“Vienna is dying,” I wrote in my journal. “While traipsing its avenues and hopping on and off of buses, we see a materialistic society bearing more dogs on leashes than children in strollers. The concierge is from Turkey. The hotel staff is mostly Asian, and the taxi driver appears to have migrated from Planet Neptune. … [Read more...]

Save Fatherhood; Save the World

A moving video for anyone who has ever had a good father.Perhaps an even more moving video for those whose fathers were broken, or deeply flawed, or not there at all.In a former parish, there was a sister-liturgist who--eager to promote "sensitivity"--decided that the Gloria should be sung with the refrain "Glory to God in the Highest, and peace to God's people on earth;" she was content to brutalize the ear, change a liturgical prayer that is not supposed to be changed, and disorient the … [Read more...]

This gives me hope – UPDATED

I can't say why, exactly, but all of this gives me hope.Clearly, thirty years of access to home video has made everyone pretty comfortable before the cameras. Until now--thanks to Reality TV, I was thinking of that as a net-negative. I am rethinking my position. A society that can handle its devolution with a bit of humor and artistic entrepreneurship gives me hope. You may feel differently. Watch the videos in order:Antoine Dodson, charismatic and with a delivery that lends itself … [Read more...]

Love Has Limits, Now?

In E. L. Doctorow's The Book of Daniel, a novel loosely based on trial and execution of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, the children of arrested spies are put into the unwilling keeping of a distant relative - a woman who accepts the responsibility and then stumps off, saying, "I'll do my best, but that's all!"Reading it as a teenager, that was my first exposure to the idea that people could choose to put limits on love.Of course, the idea has gained some traction, particularly in the past 4 … [Read more...]

The Best & Brightest Need to Vacate

Well, for sure, Mrs. Obama will never go back to her life, as usual. Apparently there are two more vacations scheduled before September, next weekend's overnight "somewhere" at Florida's Gulf coast, and then 10 days at Martha's Vineyard.I don't begrudge anyone a vacation, especially not to Martha's Vineyard, which I hear is great. But as reports suggest that coverage of the First Lady's 5 days in Spain could have generated about a billion dollars to the economy of that nation, I wonder if … [Read more...]

"Gender no longer…essential (to) marriage"

In an utterly unsurprising ruling, and one that is inarguable if one is peering through the narrowed prism of stringently secular law, and reducing marriage to a sort of contractual partnering, Judge Vaughn Walker has ruled restrictions against same-sex marriage to be unconstitutional. You can read the whole Prop 8 decision here.I was intrigued with this part:Race and gender restrictions shaped marriage during eras of race and gender inequality, but such restrictions were never part of the … [Read more...]

Hitchens; Hairless, Hale & Hearty – UPDATED

Hitchens, July 2010 / Photo by John HubaChirstopher Hitchens, in the midsts of a poison cure which would befuddle reason and leave most of us whimpering in our safe corners, manages, still to write with great beauty, humor and power. He writes with address. The notorious stage theory of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, whereby one progresses from denial to rage through bargaining to depression and the eventual bliss of “acceptance,” hasn’t so far had much application in my case. In one way, I suppose, … [Read more...]

The Clampdown; Shirley Sherrod & Ken Howell – UPDATED

Here we have the presentment of two job losses:Shirley Sherrod gives a speech; within the speech she indulges in a bit of roundaboutation, saying some things that seemed offensive, until the larger context was understood.Because the embrasure of "politically correct speech" has encouraged reactionary hyper-vigilance as to words, sentences or modes of reasoning that might steer too close to the movable line known as "hate," Sherrod's edited remarks were immediately received as such and … [Read more...]
