Obama meets with Biden, Clinton _ UPDATED

Apparently today President Obama met with his gaffe-stricken veep and his Secretary of State. A few wags have suggested recently that a put-upon Obama may "switch" these two -- putting Biden at State (John Kerry will be crushed, and our diplomatic relations may never be the same, anywhere) and Hillary Clinton on his ticket. Mrs. Clinton would certainly be a better debater against Paul Ryan than Biden. Lots of opinion out there. Some think Hillary won't do it -- that she and Bill Clinton … [Read more...]

Hilary Rosen, Ann Romney and the Credentialists – UPDATES

Rosen Romney

Although I use it during the day mostly to promote Patheos writers, after hours I consider Twitter to be something of a virtual pub; it's a place to wind down, engage in some casual conversation, yell about baseball and then say goodnight. Last evening, I tootled in to find the tweets flying fast and um, furiously. "Wha'd I miss?" I asked someone. It seems lobbyist and Dem operative Hilary Rosen had gone on CNN last night and spoken unwisely not once, but twice, first declaring that the … [Read more...]

Kim Jong Il is Dead; New Tyrants Come

While you were sleeping our already-roiling world took another hit to its tenuous stability: North Korean leader Kim Jong-il has died at the age of 69, state-run television has announced. Mr Kim, who has led the communist nation since the death of his father in 1994, died on a train while visiting an area outside the capital, the announcement said. He suffered a stroke in 2008 and was absent from public view for months. Pyongyang described his son Kim Jong-un as the "great successor" … [Read more...]

Breyer and Scalia Worth Watching -UPDATED

nino breyer hearing

This article in Slate was intriguing: The bear joke is a Scalia classic...“The story is about the two hunters who are out in the woods in their tent and there's growling in the brush near them,” Scalia told the committee. “And they open the tent flap and there is a huge grizzly bear and they start running. … And—and the guy who's a little heavier and he's running behind, he says, ‘It's no use. We're never going to outrun that bear.’ And the guy who's running in front says, ‘I … [Read more...]

"Tolerant" Left Watch

Two weeks before a tough election, they're exposing themselves continuously to be the exact opposite of who they say they are. They've been saying "tolerance" for decades. Like Inigo Montoya, I do no think the word means what they think it means. Stupid. … [Read more...]

Mo Dowd Shows Bullies How it's Done – UPDATE

Bullying and the Tolerance Disconnect have been subjects brought very much to the fore, thanks to recent tragic events. It is a serious subject that deserves to be defined in serious terms and discussed in serious tones. Maureen Dowd, ever attuned to the cultural narrative (though increasingly unable to comprehend it) has glommed on the notion of bullies; she has taken this very sober topic and rendered it--as she frequently does--into cartoon and caricature. She then casts her Candyland … [Read more...]

Roundup for Noontime Reading

Busyness has made me remiss in letting you folks know about Patheos' Religion and Faith Book Club, which is currently discussing Stephen Prothero's God is Not One, with a nifty tie-in to the PBS-series, which is also looking at the book. Sadly, neither the book nor the series has crossed my path, simply because of a lack of time, but you'll want to check out the sites and reviews, I think. Speaking of reading, Halloween is coming up. Check out John C. Wright's guffaw-inducing thoughts on the … [Read more...]

Arrogant, Self-Absorbed Capitalists

Over at Instapundit: Glenn Reynolds notes the sentiments of Netflix CEO Reed Hastings: "Americans are self-absorbed." Reynolds puckishly concurs, and suggests that Americans stop sitting at home watching their Netflix videos and go out to join a tea party. Get some fresh air. Laura Curtis at the Washington Examiner does a good job of putting Hastings quote into context and them hammering him for it in a must-read piece: In a recent interview, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings responded to a question … [Read more...]

The Ultimate in Nanny-Statism! UPDATED

Productive citizenry, diligently earning its allowances The Ultimate in Nanny-Stating: UK wants to take paychecks and give citizens an allowance! That's basically what it comes down to. "While we're 'modernizing' our systems, why don't we just take all that messy tax-calculation off everyone's hands?" The UK's tax collection agency is putting forth a proposal that all employers send employee paychecks to the government, after which the government would deduct what it deems as the appropriate … [Read more...]
