A Recovery Party? Random Chills, Thrills & Myths

Comrades, it's difficult to keep up, but the mandatory service requirement requires that you try. The oxymoronic thing passed in the Senate. It passed by a healthy margin.Yesterday a thoughtful young 24 year old whom I have known since he was about 10 or 11 sent along this piece about California regulating car colors, and I wrote back - feeling a little bit like King Arthur in the last scene of Camelot, "someday you will tell your children about the mythical land of America, where people … [Read more...]

Workers: Embrace your mandatory volunteerism!

Comrades, I am out today, but wanted to throw a few links up.On the heels of the very interesting Mike Rowe, of "Dirty Jobs", and his thoughts on work, dignity and AIG rage, some very disturbing reading, much of it thanks to Larwyn:Every American a Volunteer: the incomprehensible legislation that is speeding through Congress and will take away your right to do or not do a thing. So much for Freedom in America, circa 2009.Obama presses for more power, less transparency. What you O-lovers … [Read more...]

The Elitist War on Honest Work – UPDATED

Stopped over at American Digest (which is a good thing to do each day) and watched this 20 minute video of Discovery Channel's Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) talking about how biting a lamb's testicles off brought enlightenment. It's well worth watching - jogs the brain out of the stuff we "know" so well, we no longer think about them. And really, it's good to review and reconsider everything, from time to time, don't you find?Rowe is an educated man who has managed to not stop thinking.UPDATE … [Read more...]

A Dazzling Set-down

This is awesome:Came to it via the invaluable Gerald Warner. Here in the United States, land of the First Amendment and free speech, it is right now unthinkable that anyone would stand up in a political chamber and speak so forthrightly.I mean...can you imagine someone in our Congress or Senate actually standing up with a chart like this, and daring to talk to Obama about his "inherited" debt?Well...we are a nation being hastily (and cheaply) scrubbed and remade, by our snippy … [Read more...]

Some Housekeeping

Please pray for Heather, who is pregnant and now diagnosed with what seems to be an aggressive cancer. She is taking light radiation (with protection for the baby) and responding well to that, but she has a long way to go. Doctors hope to take the baby in April, provided its lungs can handle it. This young woman, her baby and her family, need lots of prayers.Congrats to Ann Althouse who has gone and gotten engaged to a fella who started out as a commenter on her blog, and has become her … [Read more...]

Lives "Hidden" & Suppressed

I have written a few times about how socialistic, totalitarian governments tend to go after people of faith - to try to suppress them - and they specifically (and usually pretty quickly) also move to shut down the monastics and vowed religious, and leave them bereft of community.I suspect part of the reason they try to shut down the monasteries - aside from their usual statements demanding "unity and usefulness," and even apart from the fact that such governments are threatened by the power of … [Read more...]

Inflation in the Nation

Over at Inside Catholic, Brian Saint-Paul talks the Federal Reserve, Inflation and Duck Tales. No, really. Start with this video:Then go read his "Money Meltdown" interview with Tom Woods. We're in big trouble - on all sides, politically, socially, spiritually - pick a battle and start working. Support it all on a foundation of prayer and something good may come of your efforts. This week Buster and I talked about coming threats, implosions and take-overs, and I told him again: … [Read more...]

Obama & Co Theater: Chaos & Cajolery UPDATED

Okay, so...60 days into this new presidency, it looks to me like we're going to spend the next four years watching a non-stop play of infinite acts. With none of the wit or wisdom of Pride & Prejudice, Obama and Company are going to treat us to Chaos & Cajolery.Basically, the theater production is 137 acts (presented without intermission) of Barack Obama and/or any one of his supporting players (from the veep, the speaker, the secstate, the sectreas and on down to the lowly press … [Read more...]

2002: Bailout & "too big to fail" theme predicted

Well, Bookworm may have found <something huge.Researching for another post she came across this prophetic bit of writing by economist Utpal Bhattacharya, of the Kelley School of Business at Indiana U:As no rational agent would be willing to take part in the last round in a finite economy, it is difficult to design Ponzi schemes that are certain to explode. This paper argues that if agents correctly believe in the possibility of a partial bailout when a gigantic Ponzi scheme collapses, and … [Read more...]

One of those days…

Sorry so quiet. I meant to get a lot done today, including some writing, some site housekeeping, and the last rosary podcast, but circumstances and some personal and professional business stuff have chewed up the hours and now they are spit back at me, all ughy. It's almost 5PM and I haven't even thought about what I'm making for supper.Speaking of rosary podcasts, if you look to the righthand sidebar, you'll see a new button - for now it's between the subscriber feed and the paypal button … [Read more...]
