Praying for the Pope & for All

Archbishop Timothy Dolan got a stand ovation in the middle of mass, this weekend, for his passionate defense of Pope Benedict XVI against what seems to be a concerted effort to undo his papacy, via distortion and a media rushing-to-judge.I have linked to John Allen's last several pieces on the "Benedict story" and urge that those who have not already made up your minds to read them and also take a gander at Fr. Raymond de Souza's spirited defense and timeline. The timeline is important. As … [Read more...]

"Haiti is the broken bloody body of Christ" – UPDATED

SourceGo here for my latest updates on HaitiUpdated from last night: The horrorDifficulty in Mobilizing. Yes, it's difficult; many roadblocks. The stunned peace begins to break down. Blogs for Victory notes:Looks like Haiti will become a de-facto American protectorate over the next few days as Haiti’s government is essentially collapsed and non-functional. If we’re going to do it, might as well be in for a dime, in for a dollar…get a UN resolution putting Haiti into trusteeship under A … [Read more...]

They are starting to dig mass graves for the many unclaimed bodies. Some areas, the smell is unbearable. We still are having tremors. Just now in fact. I feel that these little snippets I'm writing don't begin to … [Read more...]

Dowd: Which are miserable nuns? – UPDATED

Dominican Nuns having funSo many people have written so well about Maureen Dowd's recent display of sublime ignorance on the subject of nuns and the oppressive, patriarchal church that has oppressed them and kept them down encouraged them to do and be and lead, teach, advise and build for lo these 2000 years that I really did not feel a need to comment. After all, Archbishop Timothy Dolan said it so well, in a letter to the NY Times, which they naturally declined to print, as he called Dowd … [Read more...]

My World Series Prediction?

Several readers have asked me to predict the outcome of this world series. Now, I do dearly love the Yankees, and it is true that Hillary Clinton is no longer NY's senator, (having moved on to become a truly DREADFUL SecState), so her "I've always been a Yankees fan" curse may have finally been lifted (we have not won the WS since she was sworn into the Senate in 2001), and of course, I am rooting for them. But, the Phillies are a scrappy young team, and the defending champs. And the Yanks … [Read more...]

Pelosi's Bunker Mentality

Barack Obama seems content to let Nancy Pelosi do whatever she wants. I guess he's the campaign guy and she's the actual govern-er? Clearly, he holds neither himself nor his partner, The Pelosi, to these promises which were, after all...just words. So, a few hours ago, I read this:As Steny Hoyer talks, a Republican aide reports that: "Dems are blocking access to their press conference. There is a list, and if you're not on it, you can't get through." The aide points out: "This is a … [Read more...]

Getting to know Timothy Dolan

“True freedom is the liberty to do whatever we ought, not the freedom to do whatever we want; we are at our best when we give away freely what’s most inside of us.” --Archbishop Timothy Dolan, (RC-NY)A long and well-worth reading profile of NY's new archbishop, in New York Magazine, where the subtitle declares: If anyone can repair the church’s image, it’s Timothy Dolan. Except there are only so many nice ways to say no.For some people, that's all the Catholic Church is, a big bunch of "no." … [Read more...]

Clearing out the tab

I've got some deadlines to meet and a project I'd like to get started, so I need to stop futzing around, reading news and blogs and get to it. Here is what's been cluttering up my tab-bar for the last day or so - it's a bit of a jumble, sorry:Malta, shamelessly cribbed from CrescatBeautiful Malta! Where Doug Kmiec is the new US Ambassador after what Dan Gilgoff describes as a "strange religious/political" swearing in. Kmiec is the Catholic former Reagan WH Legal Counsel who campaigned … [Read more...]

The Leadership Void; we need St. Benedict – UPDATED

Deacon Greg sent this my way, noting, "this is extraordinary, and the piece mentions you, too!"Such a star, I am!What is "extraordinary" is the lengthy post Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley put up in his blog, addressing the criticism he has received for presiding (in a very minimalist way, it must be said) at the Funeral Mass of Sen. Ted Kennedy. For the record, I wasn't one of those suggesting Kennedy should not have a Catholic funeral; my gripe was with the sanctification of the man by … [Read more...]

"The stuff priests are made of…" UPDATED

Wow, a great photo via the Crescat, who recounts the story she found here and marvels at "the stuff priests are made of":4 June 1962. Navy chaplain Luis Padillo was giving last rites to dying soldiers as sniper fire surrounded him. A wounded soldier pulled himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Hector Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture. [See all pi … [Read more...]
