Randomness & Event Horizon – UPDATED

Getty ImagesRarely has the introduction of a work of art struck me as so exactly suited to its times as Antony Gormley's Event Horizon, whereby we find ourselves encountering a naked fiberglass-and-metal naked man at random spots in the city. From March 26 to August 15, New Yorkers will be encountering this form -made from body casts of the artist- amid their daily meanderings. As morning fog lifts, his eerie-but-beautiful silhouette will be visible. Those texting as they walk may bang into … [Read more...]

Family Guy goaded Palin into a mistake

I didn't see the whole episode, but this scene in Family Guy has apparently gotten Sarah Palin upset:Both Gov. Palin and her daughter Bristol have responded.Sarah Palin writes:People are asking me to comment on yesterday’s Fox show that felt like another kick in the gut. Bristol was one who asked what I thought of the show that mocked her baby brother, Trig (and/or others with special needs), in an episode yesterday. Instead of answering, I asked her what she thought. Here is her c … [Read more...]

Lindsay Lohan & Jesus Christ

You know, from time to time, I have more conservative Catholics give me a hard time for linking (or referencing) the Jesuit priest and writer, Fr. James Martin.James is a Jesuit, so by definition, yes, he is going to be a little more left-of-center than me on some things, but those who would dismiss him as a far-leftist, or -more importantly- as anything but obedient and loving of the church wherein he works, and the Lord he serves, risks exposing himself or herself as uninformed and a bit … [Read more...]

Sisters on Oprah – UPDATED

Just finished watching the Oprah Winfrey show featuring the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and I thought it was really excellent. I missed the very beginning, so I don't know if she did the Geisha feature, as well, but the segment with the sisters was really, very impressive. The sisters were well-spoken, intelligent, funny, good-natured and extremely forthright about their lives, and both Lisa Ling and Winfrey seemed to genuinely appreciate their comments on life, … [Read more...]

Collected in my tab-bar since I started feeling cruddy - might as well share with you all the things I have either read or "been meaning to get to reading..." All submitted mostly without comment, because I'm still not 100%."We are at war...":The president went on to say that while America will strengthen its defenses, "we will not succumb to a siege mentality that sacrifices the open society and liberties and values that we cherish as Americans, because great and proud nations don't … [Read more...]

A Young Filmmaker of Promise

Longtime readers may remember my posting a couple of film shorts written and directed by a Notre Dame student named Joe Gleason, a young man with an eye for beauty and a way of communicating great depth of feeling in small moments. My first exposure to Gleason came from Fausta's blog, where she called Gleason's The Dinner Guest "...a wonderful combination of familiarity and yearning.”. She was exactly right. I called the film "an exquisite little gem." It gave me chills the first time I … [Read more...]
