Happy Labor Day!

As you gather with your families today, for one last cookout, enjoying your easily-purchased beer, cold-transported from the brewer, your propane grill -probably invented by someone who'd forgotten to buy the charcoal lighter fluid, some time in the past- texting on your phones and so forth, remember to be thankful; say a prayer for those who have less, particularly those people who dream of living the life you have while facing oppression in third-world countries, where their "president" is … [Read more...]

"The stuff priests are made of…" UPDATED

Wow, a great photo via the Crescat, who recounts the story she found here and marvels at "the stuff priests are made of":4 June 1962. Navy chaplain Luis Padillo was giving last rites to dying soldiers as sniper fire surrounded him. A wounded soldier pulled himself up by clinging to the priest’s cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Hector Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture. [See all pi … [Read more...]

Defending Nuns, Popes, Freedom, Life…

Some interesting pieces and subjects that I have been too busy to post on this week, but really wanted to share with you:Fr. James Martin - author of one of the best Catholic autobiographical books in the last 50 years and a longtime friend of this blog - is in many ways the perfect go-to voice of "reasonable, palatable Catholicism" for many in the media (and he is a very genial, bright and exceedingly reasonable, fair-minded fellow). At big Catholic events like Papal Visits and Archbishop … [Read more...]

Palin, Obama & Not quite pulled together yet

I know it must seem like I'm being lazy and not attending to my work over here; it's not that. I just can't seem to settle in and focus on much. The news feels like it's all coming in too fast to process, the congress is passing mammoth bills it can't be bothered to read. As the deficit tops ONE TRILLION DOLLARS for the first time, ever, the president is standing at ship's helm, a deep gouge in his hull, and blocking our views while saying "everything is mostly great; things are working … [Read more...]

George H.W. Bush; Birthday Appreciation

Today is the 85th Birthday of our 41st President, George H. W. Bush. I believe he's planning to celebrate with a skydive, weather and health permitting. (He did, Hot Air has the video.)I am late to appreciation of him; I was a liberal Democrat who believed he was a silly man, while he was president. I know better, now.His son, George W. Bush, the 43rd President, writes of the joy he takes in his father. One of the most striking notions in Dubya's tribute is that, because of the … [Read more...]

One of THOSE round-ups

Yes, this is going to be one of THOSE round-ups, where I clear off all my open tabs of things I just read, and pass them off to you; covering everything from my personal stuff to a video recommendation or two.Fluff: Ann Althouse is running the inevitable captioning thread on this picture. Now I am on record as finding Michelle Obama to be an attractive woman with a mostly pleasing sense of style (but dubious judgment, as in wearing $540 sneakers to a food bank). But I have to admit, my … [Read more...]

Huge Friday Linkaround

I so much wanted to do a podcast of morning prayer, but time got away from me. Will try to get a podcast up for Vespers, this afternoon. Meanwhile, this may keep you reading into tomorrow. For your linkaround, first let me talk about me, me, me; Yesterday's Daily article on the murder of George Tiller, and the musings of some Christians as to whether Bonehoeffer made a case for such a terrible killing, garnered many comments, a few of which suggested the commenter had not read the thing, a … [Read more...]

Tiller, Long & Presidential action -UPDATE

I became mightily annoyed with a commenter yesterday here. He took some exception to my casually wondering what it meant that the Commander-in-Chief had allowed the murder of one of his troops to pass unremarked upon after little coverage, particularly after the same president had wasted no time in expressing great sorrow at the murder of an abortionist. Ignoring the fact that I've posted little-to-nothing for the better part of three weeks due to technical issues and family obligations, our … [Read more...]

Obama: Drop AlQaeda charges & stop drilling Utah – UPDATED

Okay, I think I'm done. No one can say I was not exceedingly fair to President Obama over the last week or so - and even this morning about the Exec Salary Caps for bailout beneficiaries. I don't like the precedent - and I believe now that it's been done for one group, we're going to see the Obama/Pelosi/Reid/Frank government move to cap other salaries, but I got the politics of it.But now, I think I've seen enough.Item:U.S. President Barack Obama will likely order a military commission … [Read more...]

Iraqis get the hang of voting! Obama ignores.

You're looking at Liberty, touching the future... (Essam al-Sudani/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images)"Democracy! Whiskey! Sexy!"Predictably - because this was effected by President Bush - the American press is barely mentioning it (last night I could find exactly one story about it, and that was by the BBC) but 15 million registered Iraqis went to the polls today:One Sunni Arab man strolling through Baghdad, Ali Sabah, 26, told CNN he is looking forward to casting a ballot. "Democracy i … [Read more...]
