Susan G. Koman halts Funds to Planned Parenthood

It always bugged me that Susan G. Koman for the Cure threw so much money toward Planned Parenthood when there are well-established (but ignored) links between abortion and breast cancer.Today it was announced that the foundation is halting its grants to Planned Parenthood:Planned Parenthood says the move results from Komen bowing to pressure from anti-abortion activists. Komen says the key reason is that Planned Parenthood is under investigation in Congress — a probe launched by a c … [Read more...]

We didn’t know what to say. So when we went back, nothing was said,” Disbrow recalle … [Read more...]

Our Daughters Dreams Arise from this Glad Slaughter!

220px-Rubens_saturn

Rubens; Saturn Devouring his ChildThe president, whose administration last Friday declared that religiously-founded institutions -- schools, hospitals and charities -- have no right to their own consciences when it comes to paying for contraception, abortifacients and sterilization -- dropped these pearls for us on the occasion of the anniversary of Roe v Wade, a law passed some 40 million abortions ago:As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme … [Read more...]

Encouragement for Frightened Women

Katrina Fernandez, writing passionately and from the heart, with a message to unmarried pregnant women who think they can't possibly handle being a single parent:Financially, you may argue, it will be impossible to raise a child alone. You’d be surprised how little a child really needs. All that baby stuff, you don’t need it. Also, your future child will not care in the least what kind of car you drive, house you own or rent, whether you or they wear designer clothes or own a smart phone. Al … [Read more...]

Madonna del Parto [detail] by Piero della Francesca (c. 1460)A nicely done piece by Kathryn Jean Lopez at The Catholic Thing:He will have the most amazing set of lungs.”Paul Stefan James lived for only forty-two minutes – with a heartbeat, but never taking a breath. It seemed like a cruel coincidence that his mother’s Chicken Soup for a Mother’s Soul calendar had those words to offer on his birth date. But within about a human gestational period, a maternity home would open in his … [Read more...]

Religious Persecution in the USA? – UPDATED

FreedomOfReligionL

(Photo: Saturday Evening Post)Yesterday I linked to several stories that outlined the growing tension between our government and our churches.Today at Patheos, two more perspectives:Russell Shaw declares The Persecution of Religion has Begun and explains: "Don't think I'm making the wild-eyed claim that this new persecution either is or ever is likely to become a bloody one resembling the purges of the French and Mexican Revolutions or the Communist war on religion—eruptions of v … [Read more...]

Obama Admin vs Religious Conscience UPDATES

NoIrish-1

One of the stupidest political remarks I ever heard came from Ben Affleck, who -- campaigning for Hillary Clinton during her 2000 senate run -- declared that a vote for her opponent, Rick Lazio, would amount to a vote (I am paraphrasing) "to bring back Irish Need Not Apply signs in the workplace."It does appear, though, that the Obama administration has decided that a Catholics Need Not Apply sign might be in order.Today Michael Gerson spells out why that may be so:Shortly before … [Read more...]

2009: Banner Year for Abortions

I remember having sex-ed in junior high school, 1971.So, now we've had 4 decades -- forty years -- of sex education in the public schools, which was supposed to teach kids, among other things, about contraception and "responsible, safe" sex. Sex education was supposed to "prevent unplanned pregnancies" and in that sense was supposed to help create a world where abortion was "legal, safe and rare."And abortion clinics -- especially Planned parenthood -- they're a "service" to women, and … [Read more...]

“ABC: Anybody But Catholics”

Sister Mary Ann Walsh, Writing at the USCCB Media Blog:There seems to be a new unwritten reg at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It’s the ABC Rule, Anybody But Catholics. It showed up in a letter from HHS’s Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) to advise the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Office of Migration and Refugee Services (MRS) that it would not receive a grant to continue its services for victims of human trafficking. The USCCB progr … [Read more...]

Repugnant Non-Parenting

Over on the portal page, a couple of pieces you may like, but if you only have time to read one, I urge you to read Matt Emerson's piece on selective abortion:. . .We had arrived at the future we were cautioned about, the place where human life had no value except as a field of experimentation, where men and women manufactured life like canned food. Here, in this new place, unborn babies are called "singletons" and willful killing excites all the moral energy of selling a home. You have to … [Read more...]
