A Freaky Little Coda to the “Black Mass” Story

You like a little freaky? I got a little freaky for you, right here! This gave me goosebumps when I heard it, this morning, while visiting the gang at the Son Rise Morning show.Recall this earlier post about Joris-Karl Huysmans, the French novelist who described the "Black Mass" meant to be re-enacted at Harvard, on May 12 of this year. Huysmans died in 1907, as a Benedictine Oblate.Do you know the date of his death? You'll never guess, so I'll tell you: he died on May 12. 107 years to … [Read more...]

James Martin SJ: Gravity in Face of MSNBC Condescension – UPDATED

Jesus, A Pilgrimage, Excellent New Book!

Having read and followed the work Father James Martin, S.J. for a decade or more, I would be hard-pressed to identify a time when he was less than smiling and serene in his discussions on matters of faith, prayer, church-life and more. So, it was striking, and meaningful, to see this most temperate of priests bring a respectful-but-grave presence to an MSNBC discussion that, it seems to me, was handled poorly. The participants, save the Jesuit, seemed unserious and … [Read more...]

Describer of Planned “Black Mass”: Guess How He Died?

jubilee medal

The always-interesting and ever-pastoral Bishop Christopher Coyne of Indianapolis drops a particularly juicy and instructive codicil on the whole "Black Mass" Brouhaha of the past week and, as they say in Brooklyn, it's a doozy:. . .here is the "kicker," as a friend of mine shared with me this little historical tidbit. The spokesperson for the Satanic Temple said that the presentation of the Black Mass was to be based upon the description found in the book Lá-bas ("The Damned") published in … [Read more...]

Heard About Brouhaha at Harvard? Thank the Blogs UPDATED

Does Catholic blogging matter? Does it make a difference? That's more or less the question being debated at the Catholic Herald, UK, in light of the "Protect the Pope Blog" brouhaha, and I was pleased to be able to contribute to the conversation:Particularly in matters of evangelisation, the Church trusts that any field seeded for love of Christ and in service to others will – through the patient, expedient promptings of the Holy Spirit – bear good fruit at the time appropriate to God’s purp … [Read more...]

What Would Screwtape Say re Harvard Black Mass?

Yesterday, someone sent an email asking me, "Do you have enough energy to write this as a Screwtape Letter?"This" being the "Harvard Black Mass", I really didn't. As it turns out, fifteen hours at the desk is my limit.I didn't have to have the energy, however, because my correspondent provided an example of what he had in mind, and I thought was full-witty."Dear Wormwood,I congratulate you on the success of your latest efforts at Harvard University. I must say, dear nephew, that … [Read more...]

Coat of Arms Color Boston

This is the official statement, in full:The Catholic community in the Archdiocese of Boston expresses its deep sadness and strong opposition to the plan to stage a “black mass” on the campus of Harvard University in Cambridge. For the good of the Catholic faithful and all people, the Church provides clear teaching concerning Satanic worship. “Yes we will use a Consecrated Host” at Harvard “Black Mass”

Following up on this post, I have made a couple of phone calls to the The Cambridge Queen’s Head where Madelyn, an events manager, first promised to "research this", saying that her computers were down. During a subsequent conversation, sounding very flustered, she and told me she had no comment to offer at the moment. Confirming that she is the Events manager, she promised a response later today. She did confirm to another caller that the Harvard Cultural Exchange is having an event there, … [Read more...]

No Confirmation Yet on Harvard Black Mass Story

I saw this last night at the Women of Grace site, and was skeptical. I remain so today:The Harvard Extension Cultural Studies Club is hosting a black mass on May 12 to be staged by The Satanic Temple and which will include a consecrated host.According to a press release from The Satanic Temple, they plan on presenting the black mass at the Queens Head Pub in Memorial Hall, 45 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA along with “an academic narration that explores the ritual’s unique history and pra … [Read more...]
