OWS: This Food is for the Privileged! UPDATED

NYPOST Chad

Delicious Irony:The Occupy Wall Street volunteer kitchen staff launched a “counter” revolution yesterday -- because they’re angry about working 18-hour days to provide food for “professional homeless” people and ex-cons masquerading as protesters. For three days beginning tomorrow, the cooks will serve only brown rice and other spartan grub instead of the usual menu of organic chicken and vegetables, spaghetti bolognese, and roasted beet and sheep’s-milk-cheese salad. They will also pr … [Read more...]

Calling and Revolution and Calling UPDATED

OWS APF GETTY

(Photo: APF/Getty)My piece today at First Things is a little odd, I think. In some spots it is deliberately to the fore, and in others, deliberately ambiguous, and it is talking about two seemingly very different things -- the Occupy Wall Street folks who know that they want something, but are not quite able to articulate what that something might be, and impossibility of nurturing a sense of "calling" in our children when we over-manage their lives, from an early age, teach that … [Read more...]

Feeding and Diaper Changing on Wall Street UPDATED

me signs

Here is something I don't understand. Why is it the Tea Partiers were able to clean up after themselves at all of their gatherings, no matter how large, but the Wall Street "occupiers" have to be told to leave the park so the city can clean up after them, at which time they will be able to re-enter the park and mess it up, again, without responsibility or accountability? Is this what we've come to? Treating adult people like infants in need of a diaper change?Wait, it gets better. … [Read more...]

ACT III: American Fall – The Revolution

michelle-obama-fist

Michelle Obama did tell us "Barack Obama will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual". Specifically, she said:Barack Obama will require you to work. He is going to demand that you shed your cynicism. That you put down your divisions. That you come out of your isolation, that you move out of your comfort zones. That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.Oh, irony. The most … [Read more...]

Occupiers as Mindless Drones -UPDATE

Wow. And they say religious folk want to be told what to think and what to say! This is pathetic. It reminds me of kindergarten. It's actually kind of terrifying: "just tell me what to say and I'll parrot it." Completely mindless.UPDATE: At the urging of a few commenters, I looked at the video again, and concede that this may in fact be less a mindless-drone-fest than I had thought. As some know, I don't venture forth into crowds very often, so I have not experienced or witnessed … [Read more...]

Krugman, 9/11 and Absolutes: "What if I am wrong?" UPDATED

Yesterday, someone sent me a link to Paul Krugman's already-infamous 9/11 Vomit O' Venom, launched at all of his favorite boogeymen, and I duly posted it to facebook but didn't think much beyond what I wrote back to my friend: "the man seems a wreck. A small fellow feeling impotent; so much of what he is sure of, he is not sure of, at all. This says so much more about him than it does anyone else."And because I was busy, I put it out of my mind. This morning, though, Glenn Reynolds has a … [Read more...]

Newsweek not Sexist, Just Unprofessional

I've been meaning to write on that absurd, and frankly tabloid-worthy Newsweek cover photo of Michele Bachmann, mostly to give props to Terry O' Neill, of the National Organization for Women, who has kept her word since declaring that "from here on" (meaning from the point of the 2010 elections) she was going to speak up when female candidates -- even conservative ones -- were subjected to sexism. Not that my opinion would matter, but I doubted she'd do it, and she's proved me wrong; O'Neill … [Read more...]

Will the UK Riots Come to USA?

The situation in London seems dire and disheartening and there is already one iconic photo emerging from the story:Lots of obnoxious, frightening, maddening and infuriating stories coming over the wires, with lots of conjecture as to the cause, but I found this Drudge headline most distressing:American Baseball Bats Selling Fast in UK...Citizens arming themselves for protection, or mobsters looking for more strength? I'd bet it's the former. Arms are difficult to come by, in England, but … [Read more...]

Powerline Prizes for Better and Worse

Lots of good songs showing up in Powerline's artful debt-ceiling contest. I, like many others, enjoyed this punk rock anthem, "You're Gonna Pay":+ + + + + + + I am much less taken with the exceedingly popular ditty "Don't You See", not so much for any flaw in the song -- it's nice enough; it has a good beat, and the kid singing it has a voice that's pure and true -- but I always get creeped-out when children are used to deliver political messages. Let's be consistent, here, … [Read more...]

The Applause at Mass has to Stop

Katrina Fernandez has one of those posts up that makes you want to cheer and staple to the doors of a church.Kids are already told every day in school their self esteem and self importance is more valued than being literate. Now they get to come to mass and have Fr. Well Meaning reinforce this narcissistic behavior too. Forget that other guy. What's his name. Oh right. Jesus. It was so bad these masses began to embarrass my son. He sang in the choir because it gave him joy and he liked … [Read more...]
