No, the Rosary is not “vain repetition”; here’s why

From my "Ora Pro Nobis" column at The Catholic AnswerHow often do we think of Christmas in April? In praying a daily Rosary, one will ponder the Nativity of the Lord, and the whole great mystery of His incarnation, twice a week, throughout the year. The entirety of the Gospel is therefore alive for us at all times, and the insights and consolations that arise from our contemplation, or the intentions of those whose names enter into our awareness, render the prayer continually changed, bead … [Read more...]

Lenten Reading: Rosary and Inner Healing

I don't know why but I just can't bring myself to produce my annual "Suggested Lenten Reading and Resources" post. It's not that I have no recommendations; like a vaudeville comedian, "I got a million of 'em."I just have no head for gathering it all together in one spot. I think I need to shake things up, do something different. Maybe the Holy Spirit wants me to hit precise targets -- make sure certain people see certain books -- and that's best done shot-by-shot than with a spray of ammo? … [Read more...]

The Key to Pope Francis

The Holy Father continues to speak with a sharp sense of urgency:“Yes, you have to come to know Jesus in the Catechism – but it is not enough to know Him with the mind: it is a step. However, it is necessary to get to know Jesus in dialogue with Him, talking with Him in prayer, kneeling. If you do not pray, if you do not talk with Jesus, you do not know Him. You know things about Jesus, but you do not go with that knowledge, which He gives your heart in prayer. Know Jesus with the mind - the … [Read more...]

October; Rosary Month Closes

October is the month in which Catholics are encouraged to recommit to praying the Rosary. As it draws to a close, I thought I'd repost this, from a couple of years ago -- a rosary prayed while contemplating the Vladimir Theotokos. The Crying Out of Flesh and GodCreator and created, sharing the same flesh, the same blood, entwined, together. The whole story, right there in the Joyful Mysteries. The Annunciation: Since Eden, God's purpose--slow and baffling, yet inexorable--has been … [Read more...]

Helping You Get Enthused…

...because that's what I do!I know you know October is dedicated to the Rosary, and that is why I have directed you here and here over the past weeks. So, today, let Pat Gohn dispel any idea you might have that the rosary is the prayer of blue-haired old ladies:I have an aversion to being called a "Rosary rattler." But to those who know me, this isn't news. That was the name the local hipsters dubbed the so-called blue-hairs kneeling before Mass petitioning the Blessed Virgin … [Read more...]

October Gift: Renew Our Rosary Appreciation — UPDATED

The wonderful Dominican Nuns of the Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary have produced this really lovely video to help us appreciate the Holy Rosary and to deepen our abilities to ponder the 15 fundamental mysteries they entail. I enjoyed it very much, especially the lovely soprano voices!UPDATE: The sisters did a quick adjustment to the video as they note here. It's been updated here. Sister Emailer informs me that the first version was "elongated" which she didn't exactly mind (hey, a girl … [Read more...]
