The Atrocity in Orlando

Here is the message that I sent out yesterday to my own community:Today our country experienced what President Obama has called "an act of terror and an act of hate."In the days and weeks ahead we will struggle to come to terms with yet another mass shooting, this one the worst in our nation's history. We will hear calls for prayers and for gun legislation. We will argue about religious fanaticism and immigration and security. Many people will call the shooter "crazy" or otherwise … [Read more...]

Ben Carson Hates Israel!

Ben Carson speaks with great authority about the Bible. This is in spite of the fact that Ben Carson doesn’t know seem to know anything about the Bible.Last week he was asked about why he opposes gay marriage. He remarked that legalizing it now opens the door to the “the next natural question”: Why should we not open marriage up to polygamy? The whole gay marriage issue, he noted, shows how America is ignoring “the word of God” and tossing “the whole thing in the garbage.”But it is act … [Read more...]

Francis and Kim

I was not planning to write about the visit of the Bishop of Rome, whom I unaffectionately refer to as Pope Fluffy. But that was before I read about his meeting with Kim Davis.Yesterday’s edition of the Times reported that Fluffy was asked what he thought about government employees who refuse to do their jobs: Asked about government employees who refused to discharge their duties as an act of religious conscience, including refusing to grant marriage licenses to gay couples, Francis did n … [Read more...]

Murderous Jewish Religious Fanaticism, Part Two

View image | gettyimages.comBefore I take a short vacation hiatus from the blog and my congregation, here is part two of my look at last week’s murderous religious Jewish fanaticism. This time we are looking at the Haredi variety. It is not necessarily ultra-nationalist, but it is increasingly extremist in most other ways. (Honestly, I don’t even know if it’s worth saying “increasingly” any more. I think it’s increased to just about the maximum.)By now, what happened at the Jerusalem Gay P … [Read more...]

Bring on the Disparagement

It’s so much more enjoyable watching the right wing foam at the mouth from this side of the historic decision on same-sex marriage. Part of this is just the smug satisfaction that the good guys won. But there’s something else going on, too. It bubbles up in many of their stuttering reactions and expressions of disbelief. I’m referring to their fear that, as opponents of same-sex marriage, they will now be looked down upon.I noted this in my previous post about Jewish reactions to the decis … [Read more...]

Jewish Reaction to Gay Marriage Decision

So how has the Jewish community responded to the marriage equality decision? My own Facebook page demonstrates 100% approval. But that’s not really so scientific. Nevertheless, it does reflect the actual American Jewish consensus. The last poll of the community indicated that 83% supported marriage equality. The Forward provided a breakdown of Jewish celebrities. We Jews do love bragging about our celebrities. The 83% support of American Jewry combined with Hollywood’s nearly 100% approval … [Read more...]

Personal Reflections on a Great Day

I grew up in Miami in the 1970s.Those were the years when a woman named Anita Bryant led an attack on gay rights in my hometown.Back then homophobic bigots like her were not condemned. Civic leaders, respected broadcasters, clergy from liberal denominations all heeded her cry to “save the children.”I was one of those children. She didn’t save me.Instead, what she and the narrow-minded, ignorant and unthinking people who followed her did was to consign me and others like me to an a … [Read more...]

Hypocrisy, Thy Name Is Duggar

View image | I always hesitate before blogging about something that’s already receiving widespread coverage. No one needs me to fill in details on events that are flying around the internet at lightning speed. But there’s something about this Duggar situation that’s really chapping my you-know-what. (If you don’t know about the Josh Duggar story, you can find all the ugly details here.) Maybe it’s the fact that these people are not just stars of some stupid reality show, but h … [Read more...]

Russia Does Not Heart Pussy Rioters Or Gays

Russians seem to love authoritarianism.  It doesn’t matter if it’s the czarist, Communist or modern variety. The latest flavor is different only in degrees.  Czar Vladimir, like his spiritual predecessors, has embraced God, specifically the Russian Orthodox Church, as a convenient enforcer.  Protest band Pussy Riot learned this the hard way.  From Masha Lipman at The New Yorker: … [Read more...]

A Great Example Of God’s Connection To Morality

Speaking of religion and morality, here’s another in a seemingly endless flood of great moralist preachers calling for a great moral approach to gays and lesbians.  It’s presented to us by Charles L. Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina:Build a great, big, large fence -- 150 or 100 mile long -- put all the lesbians in there.  Do the same thing for the queers and the homosexuals and have that fence electrified so they can't get out...and you know what, in a few ye … [Read more...]
