That would be the vesting of a bishop, I believe. Subdeacons in action!

That's not Roman Rite, it looks Melkite, that is unless it's the Greeks or the Russians (the 'orthodox")

  • http://www.blogger.com/profile/13388784325608457371 Thom, SFO

Looks like Russian, Antiochian, or OCA. The iconostasis doesn't say "Greek" to me, but I love being wrong.

Slavic of some sort. The priest on the right (glasses) is wearing a Russian high-back. You may see those in Greek or Antiochian parishes, but only rarely (and usually only on a Slavic concelebrant). I doubt very much that this is Melkite.

    If it's St. Vlad's it's OCA.

does that mean that suddenly no one is going to like the picture now that it's OCA? I wonder. :-P

Nah, I was just happy that I thought it was OCA. :-)Some of your morerefined readers, however, might look down their noses at the Americanized Orthobastards. :-p

Where are all the short haired women Eucharistic priestesses, in pants? This wasn't in America, that's for sure. And sadly, in Mexico, either.

"does that mean that suddenly no one is going to like the picture now that it's OCA?"Why? I'm OCA. Anyway, like I said, Slavic.

"Where are all the short haired women Eucharistic priestesses, in pants?"Uhm, we don't have those — not even here in the US. We have no "Eucharistic lay ministers" of any kind, as a matter of fact. Only priests and deacons may administer the Holy Mysteries.

Dear Right Wing.I was being facetious in my comment.Since you are taking me to task, please allow me to elucidate. My experience has been to see and hear (with my eyes and ears) women come in after a Priest gave Extreme Unction and perform a ‘laying on of hands’ to ‘bless' someone into Heaven. This was with the full knowledge that a Traditional Priest had already given the Unction. I have seen women give blessings to children as their mothers and fathers received Holy Communion. Tell me when to stop.Is the Sacrament of Extreme Unction and Blessing at Holy Communion not a Priestly function? And while we are at it Right Wing, a Catholic Deacon is a celibate man on his way to the Priesthood.A Freemason Roman Protestant Deacon is one in need of his wife leading him around by the nose.My experience is from the west coastline of California to where that lighthouse is at the tip of Long Island; and parts in between. We don’t have women who are functioning in Priestly capacities in America? To remain ignorant and not stand against the clericalization of the laity, especially women, is to become an accomplice of the adversaries of our Divine Master. May God our Lord in his infinite and supreme goodness be pleased to give us his abundant grace, that we may know his most holy will, and entirely fulfill it. Pablo, For clarification, Right Wing is Orthodox not Catholic, which you may not have known. Given that, he was 100% accurate in his statements in reference to Orthodoxy. The picture is from an Orthodox seminary. Thom and I are ribbing about OCA, because the ethnic Orthodox look down their noses at the OCA as not being Orthodox enough. No need for self defenses.

That's okay. Pablo didn't know. As for the OCA …Maybe not the right kind of ethnic is more to the point (and it depends on where you are in the US). We keep close ties to the Moscow Patriarchate, but in the east (that is, here, and the surrounding states), several things happened that changed the face of the OCA. First, there were large numbers of Ukrainian immigrants with no Ukrainian church. They became part of the OCA. Then, in what can only be described as a case study in how to quickly and permanently drive people away from your church, the policies of the Latin bishops drove whole parishes of Rusyns (Carpatho-Russians) to the OCA (we got us lots of Slavs here in Pennsylvania — and that was the first wave of the Rusyn return, the second several decades later formed ACROD). To an American sensibility, Slavic is Slavic, and the OCA is about as Slavic as it gets. From a specifically Russian perspective, the OCA in the west is Russian, but the OCA in the east is Ukrainian, not Russian (and you know all about how much the two love each other)."Ethnicness" interestingly is a dying issue among the Orthodox, but is still very much an issue here for Eastern Rite Slavs (the BCC and UCC). The OCA is the Orthodox Church in America. We're less interested in remaining ethnically pure, and more interested in gaining converts and evangelizing (we have a constant stream of converts at my parish alone). I guess it boils down to which of the two priorities one considers to be more important.

I wouldn't know OCA from CIA…I just love those fancy duds! I know…I'm totally un-refined, but somebody has to fill that bill. ;-) Thanks for posting all these cool, pics, CC, I'm loving them!

I am OCD but that isn't important right now. I personally think the OCA rocks.. But that is coming from an Eastern Catholic…
