Demonizing Each Other…

Demonizing Each Other… January 10, 2015

… Yesterday I asked readers here, on Facebook, and on Twitter to give me three words to describe Democrats. I was curious to see if conservative republicans would be any more charitable than their liberal counter parts.

More charitable, no. But less racist, by far. For a group of people identifying themselves as tolerant of others they certainly seemed focused on intolerance toward white people. And the elderly. And men. Yeah, there were a whole lot of “Rich white men” answers. Last time I checked being white or old wasn’t a negative attribute. Neither is being rich, really. And I love men.

But is it a fair representation?

No more so than the answers people left in my combox and on my facebook page. Now, that’s not to say I am making an example of my friends and readers. I just want to show how easy it is to make generalizations about the other side and how willingly we do so. And for the record… I was no more charitable in my own reply.

See how easy it is? And in case you were curious, here is what 25 college aged Republicans had to say about Democrats. Just as nasty if you ask me. Of course the comments that followed were equally acerbic and hateful.

Oh, and then there’s the videos. Obama gonna pay my mortgage. Obama gonna give me a free Obama-phone. Obama can shit rainbows and unicorns. What’s a Benghazi?

Look, everyone knows college kids are notorious for their hubris. They live in an isolated world influenced by idealistic professors. Not all, but most. I give them props for even turning up at a presidential debate. You wouldn’t find the twenty year old version of me at any political event, no sir. I’d be in some dark corner chewing no-doz like candy cramming for finals in a course I only bothered to show up to class twice for.

Showing up to college campus with a video camera looking to make college kids look stupid and ill informed is no great feat. It’s not ground breaking undercover journalism. It’s fish in a barrel, folks.

Politics is a reality show and the media are the editors. They can paint a political party whatever shade you wish to see them in. Republicans can be ignorant hillbillies or the out of touch stinkin’ rich. Democrats can be man hating baby killers or entitled trust fund hispters. Republicans can be a faith based party fighting to maintain the moral high ground and Democrats can can be the party looking out for the little guy and impoverished. Take your pick.

Which ever way you want to look at it, it’s not a real true representation. It’s sweeping generalizations and each us can probably personally name an exception to the stereotype. It’s not democrats that bother me, just their leader.
