A Choir of Crickets…

... What happens when take the night song of crickets and slow it down enough to discern the pulses within each rapid chirp? An unending song of praise. H/T Simcha Fisher … [Read more...]

Crescat and The Neon Halos…

Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, Wichita, Kansas

... Most Catholics I know have extremely good taste for aesthetics. Their preferences are typically high brow, bordering on snobbery. That's because we know beauty. But secretly, we do love our kitsch. We heart it with the fierce affection a parent has for their children's scribbles. Or maybe that's just the boricua in me talking. Because I love me some bathtub Madonnas, statues with human hair wigs, and neon halos. Especially neon halos. Blessed Virgin Mary at St. Margaret Mary … [Read more...]

... Because being crabby all the time is a lot of work. And I hate work. So lets be joyful instead. Rick Guidotti's life has been all about beauty and the power of images. He spent years as a fashion photographer in Milan, Paris, and New York. But 15 years ago, while photographing a woman with Albinism, Guidotti was shocked by images in medical textbooks. Those medical pictures changed his life and ever since Guidotti has devoted his talent to the disabled. Dr. Nancy Snyderman … [Read more...]

Shallow Definitions of Beauty, The Pope is Not Impressed…

ugly_baby

... Beauty and ornamentation are not the same thing. You can have a stunningly beautiful liturgy without a drop of ornamentation. Just ask the Carthusians, Trappists, or other ascetic religious orders. Yes, I am a visual person and have referred to myself as a Catholic magpie... Oooo, shiny. I need the ornamentation to keep me focused, but not everyone does. And just because a church isn't Baroque-d out doesn't mean the liturgy is necessarily "ugly" or less reverent. Also, the Eucharist … [Read more...]

... Orlande de Lassus's Media Vita, as described by my friend, Colin; "(Lassus) is darker than the brightness of Palestrina, so that his bright moments sparkle out of the darkness. It's a chiaroscuro in music - the soundtrack of a Caravaggio painting." The beauty of sound The beauty of sight We adore Thee, O Christ, and bless Thee. ... Wonderful men, I have not forgotten you. Please refer to this link while I blather on below. The newest thing in beauty creams is something called BB Cream. BB Cream is a blemish balm, hence the B.B. name. It's a multipurpose cream that is supposed to even skin tone, hydrate, provide sunblock protection, work as a primer and replace the need for heavy foundations. Essentially it's purpose is to make you look ten years younger and heavily airbrushed. Once a combination cream only … [Read more...]

Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Beautiful…

"Fr. Hunwicke celebrated his First Mass in the Old Rite at Brompton Oratory."

... I really don't understand all this animosity towards the Church and her liturgy. I feel like saying "don't hate us because we're beautiful". Trite sounding but yet it rings true. I wouldn't go so far as to say that those who criticize liturgical beauty hate beautiful things; I just think they don't fully understand how it's utilized within the Church. The full purpose of liturgical beauty and ritual is to physically manifest the spiritually metaphysical through the use of our senses. … [Read more...]
