Fortified with vitamin BXVI. Not a substitute for regular mass attendance. Side effects may include mackerel snapping.

... They are not a fashion statement. And no, they're not Prada either. What have I said repeatedly about the Church... everything is done for a reason. In 2007 Esquire, being secular stupid, dubbed Pope Benedict "Accessorizer of The Year" for his ruby red slippers, thinking them just another fashionable style signature - like a tie clip or pocket square. As if. So what's the real story behind the shoes that have inspired so much curiosity? They are not Prada. The papal shoemaker … [Read more...]

... You would think I would learn. Learn and trust. What's one of the cardinal rules of the Catholic Church... everything has a reason. Look at the liturgy. One who doesn't know better sees meaningless ritual. But each action is seeped in meaning and, of course, serves a purpose. It has a reason. The Church doesn't just do things for the sake of doing them. So when I started seeing pictures of Pope Benedict coming down from the walls the minute he left the protection of the Swiss Guard I … [Read more...]
The North American College waves goodbye to Pope Benedict XVI as he flies to Castel Gandalfo. ... Just watching coverage on EWTN. I have no commentary to add. Besides I think we could do with a lot less talking and a little more praying. … [Read more...]

... I've been trying to remain faithful, but it still breaks my heart to see Papa go. And the strange thing is I keep getting "what's the big deal" from not just my protestant friends but from my Catholic ones as well. The Pope delivering his last Angelus to a crowd of 100,000 people. View more photos here. the farewell begins... for translation click here. … [Read more...]

... I remember the passing of Bl. John Paul II. The media coverage put a glaring spotlight on the Catholic Church; a positive spot light for once. People of all religions were united in their grief for JPII's death. The Church received a larger than normal number of new members into Her fold that year after the funeral. At my parish alone, we had people lined up at the doors to join RCIA. Curiosity drove them there because of the supportive out pouring and positive attention Catholics received. … [Read more...]

... What? The pope is resigning?! Aside from feeling like a kid whose dad just walked out on them... no, that's it. That pretty much accurately sums up my initial reaction. A feeling of shock followed by a tremendous sense of loss and abandonment. Then when I tried explaining the news to my son he just said "I thought you couldn't quit being a Pope. Aren't things like that, those promises you make, supposed to be forever?" Ah, yes. Vows. So over dinner we talked about retiring, we talked … [Read more...]

I can understand why parents want the Pope to kiss their babies. So they can brag, "Little Tommy was kissed by the Pope; he won't do drugs when he grows up. Little Max was only kissed by a deacon when he was an infant, so who knows with him." But politicians? Yeah, what's the deal with having politicians kissing babies? Oh, and Happy belated birthday, Msgr. Gänswein. I got you something really nice but I'm waiting to deliver it in person. … [Read more...]

... Oh! Em! Gee! Pope Benedict is coming to Philly in 2015. Philly is practically within arms reach! Oooo. Oooo. And I bet he'll have a few of the boys with him and Gorgeous George too. Better start setting aside some bail money. Good thing I got that attorney on retainer. PHILADELPHIA — Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia welcomed the decision by Pope Benedict XVI to hold the 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia as a moment of “grace” that will provide an … [Read more...]

I didn't know Pope Benedict had a kitty. I may need to reevaluate my very low opinion of cats. For the most part my cat treats me like a piece of heated furniture and my house is his hotel. As far as cats go; however, mine is the perfect cat - if there were such a thing. He stays outside all day so I don't even own a litter box. We named him Benedict but I might as well call him meat-stick; it's not like they come when they're called. Edited to add: Apparently I've been clueless to the … [Read more...]
