priest fired over improv prayers…

... this story reminds me of a local parish I visited once where the priest changed the Agnus Dei to something like, "Protector of the Earth, you take away our carbon footprint" and some other such nonsense. "In a rare letter of explanation about an internal personnel dispute, Bishop Edward Braxton of Belleville, Ill., publicly responded to the firing of the Rev. William Rowe, who has been pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Carmel, Ill., for 18 years. Braxton said in the Feb. 14 … [Read more...]

she is really a bitch who writes self congratulatory litanies of appeasing rubbish

... There isn't a day that doesn't go by where I am not absolutely grateful for my Catholic faith. I love being a Catholic, yet there are days when being a Catholic is an extreme exercise in patience. Especially when dealing with other Catholics. We are a contentious lot. I believe with all my heart the tenets of the Catholic Church and faithfully practice them to the best of my ability - my flawed human ability. If I falter the sacrament of reconciliation is sought. I am not a perfect … [Read more...]

i can haz catholicism

... I always have the most frustrating conversations about religion with my close friend, who shall forever be referred to here as The Non-Catholic. The Non-Catholic & I have tried without success to date on several occasions. In every possible way we are compatible except for matters of faith and religion. It is for that reason we remain such close friends, and nothing more. Sometimes love can not conquer all, which is why when asked I do not recommend people start romantic relationships with … [Read more...]

... From the Archdiocese of Detroit, "The Church encourages the Christian faithful to promote or sustain a variety of apostolic undertakings but, nevertheless, prohibits any such undertaking from claiming the name Catholic without the consent of the competent ecclesiastical authority (see canon 216 of the 1983 Code of Canon Law). For some time, the Archdiocese of Detroit has been in communication with Mr. Michael Voris and his media partner at Real Catholic TV regarding their prominent use … [Read more...]

theological justifications for austere churches…

... I'm truly blessed to be a member of a wonderful parish. I enjoy inviting friends and family members, Catholic and not, to church with me. Their reaction is always the same, "What a beautiful church!". Last night I was discussing with my step-mom, who's Greek Orthodox, the terrible state of my Abuelita's parish in Virginia. They've removed the kneelers and the only thing decorating the walls is a single felt banner with the name of the parish glue-gunned on with felt lettering. I guess … [Read more...]

... Now that we have the new mass translation is effect we, as Catholics, will have nothing else to bicker about. We are going to live happily ever after. One big happy family, forever and ever. Amen. And with your spirit. Or something like that, to paraphrase Lino Rulli. Like I've asked in the past, is there nothing we won't fight about? Wait, what? … [Read more...]

and nothing caught fire…

... Normal blogging will resume after this brief moment of parental pride. Tonight The Boy served mass for the first time. I'm not sure who was more nervous but I can proudly say that no altar linens were set ablaze. That is all. Side note; when I posted these and other photos on my facebook page a few commented wanting to know if this was a mass in extraordinary form. Nope. It's just a regular solemnly celebrated novus ordo mass at my wonderful parish. A vigil mass no less. … [Read more...]

should girls be allowed to be altar servers…

not_this_shit_again

... here's a fun poll. You can make the obvious guess how I voted. If the purpose of being an altar server is to ignite the fires for the priesthood than why have a girl serve? To what purpose? And as a mother of a boy, I can attest that young men have no interest in pursuits that are considered girly. In fact, call me crazy, but women shouldn't be lectors either. That being said, I know quite a few young ladies who are altar servers and I know their parents. I know it would be … [Read more...]

the rise of WebMD Catholicism…

... You should take a moment to read Matt Emerson's fantastic article. "the notion of WebMD Catholicism helps frame a second concern: Faced with this multiplying number of sources, one might ask: Does the availability of information seduce us too quickly to believe that we can accurately understand and diagnose the theological and liturgical questions we face? Put another way, what has become of, or how do we make sense of, the notion of expertise among those who profess an interest in what … [Read more...]
