... Absolutely repugnant.[NewsBuster] In the new abortion romantic comedy hitting theaters, the child in “Obvious Child” is anything but obvious.Director Gillian Robespierre’s “Obvious Child” follows an aspiring young comedian, Donna Stern, whose abortion turns into a “happily ever after” love story. Opening June 6, the film stresses “self-discovery and empowerment” and the “realities of independent womanhood.” With endorsements from Planned Parenthood and NARAL as well as applause from … [Read more...]

Noah, you so crazy…

noah-poster2

... So I saw the movie Noah.Good Lord, what a ghastly mess.I'm no theologian but somehow I don't recall reading about Noah's bloodthirsty, psychopathic, stab all the babies tendencies. But it wasn't all bad. Noah was entertaining enough with decent special effects. My absolute favorite part of the movie was when the stone giants protected the Hobbits.Wait. What movie is this again?OK, so it wasn't the worst movie I ever saw. That honor belongs to Apocalypto, the … [Read more...]

The Desolation of Smaug, a Comedy of sorts…

... I don't think Tolkien set out to write a comedy in The Hobbit. I also don't think Peter Jackson had set out to film a comedy in The Desolation of Smaug. But my word... what an unintentionally hilarious movie it was. It was like Pirates of the Caribbean with Dwarves. And similar to everything Hollywood touches, the book and movie have very little in common. It was a fun action film, I'll give it that, but the love triangle between Legolas, a totally made up She-Elf, and Kili was … [Read more...]

Beautiful Space, Beautiful Life: A Review of “Gravity” …

... I don't go to the movies often. It takes quite a bit of convincing to get me to part with that much money on a single movie ticket. Yet when I saw the trailer for the movie Gravity I said, take my money please.Strangely, the sounds of impact as debris hit the Explorer was added specifically for the trailer and doesn't appear in the film. As we all know, space is silent. This silence punctuates the terror of drifting alone in space.Gravity is all about the senses, so shill out … [Read more...]

World War Zzzzzzzzzz…

... So I went to see the movie World War Z. I was already dubious from the very start after seeing the trailer. It looked nothing like anything from the book. I was right. If you read the book and then went to see the movie don't expect one to be even remotely like the other. The Oatmeal even created this nice little Venn Diagram to illustrate the disparity in the two.I suppose I could qualify this as a fun action flick without any depth, that you may actually enjoy if you go in with … [Read more...]

A Ten Year Old’s Take on Peter Jackson’s, The Hobbit…

jackie-chan-meme

... For my son's tenth birthday yesterday I took him to see The Hobbit. If the previous Lord of The Rings movies were any indication, there is a lot of walking in The Hobbit. Roughly two hours of walking. It was during one of the many grand and lengthy walking scenes that my son leans over and wonders out loud, "Why doesn't Gandalf just summons those giant birds of his and be done with it?"Which naturally reminded me of this...And at the end, well sort of the "end" [spoiler alert] … [Read more...]

Moonrise Kingdom, a movie I’d pay to see twice…

... Not only would I pay to see Moonrise Kingdom two times, I'd probably shell out the extra bucks to purchase it on DVD just to have in my movie library. I may even buy the soundtrack. Yes, it was that good and perfectly Wes Anderson-y, down to the minutest detail.I was absolutely delighted by Bob Balaban as an omniscient gnome-like narrator. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson, and are familar with his quirky characters and fascinating story telling you will not be disappointed in … [Read more...]

To Rome With Love…

... I hate Woody Allen movies, so the fact that I went to see his latest film is a testament to how much I love Rome. I will see any movie with "Rome" in the title even it means sitting through two hours of Allen's whiny, nebbish, neurotic schtick. I loved everything about this movie, except Woody Allen and weird social commentary on the popularity of celebrities. I mean, I got his point, but it was so outlandish it ruined the feel of the film for me. I wanted more of Rome and the way the city … [Read more...]
