There Really Are No Guarantees…

... Did you know the Salvation Army doesn't sell donated Bibles? Nope. They give them away instead. I learned this yesterday when I was there looking for picture frames to refurbish. The nice lady at the register gave my son a children's bible which naturally led into a conversation about religion. And like most conversations about religion here in the southern fried South, she told me ..."I used to be Catholic. My parents were real into it too. We went to church on feasts day & every … [Read more...]

Beating Summer Boredom and That Lull In Learning…

Quiver-1889-300x251

... I've been a long time advocate for year long schooling. None of this three months off for the summer nonsense. Three months for kids to get all soft and intellectually lazy and used to sleeping in every day so that when school finally starts back up again in the fall you're forced to use herculean efforts to rouse them in the morning so they won't miss the bus. It's the lull in learning I find to be the most troubling. So please, if you'll allow me ... a post on how to sneak learning … [Read more...]

Catholic Nerdom…

... The Boy has been altar serving two years now. Two years; it's hard to believe how quickly it all flies by. Last night he learned he got a promotion of sorts. He is no longer the lowly torch bearer. That position is for the newbies. No, now he is training for the position of cross bearer/ book bearer/ bell ringer.Upon hearing the news of his advancement, The Boy declared "Huzzah! I leveled up!".This from the child that kicked, wailed, and screamed when I made him start serving. … [Read more...]

When A Teen Rejects Their Parent’s Faith…

simpsonschurchwide

... I have to say, as a parent this is one of my biggest fears. It's a nasty world, even nastier when you face it without the roots of firmly planted faith. I should know. I spent the majority of my youth rebelling against all types of authority, most especially religious authority. So I can say with 100% certainty that this article is probably the most accurate thing I have ever read on the subject. And I don't say that lightly.Dr. Gregory Popcak writes; When teens fight you about … [Read more...]

... You wanna know what it's like to watch kids play baseball? More specifically, your child play baseball.Let me break down. The other team has boys on first and second. The kid up to bat hits a line drive straight to your kid in left center field. Your kid catches the hit and throws it to third like a boss. And the kid on third ... yeah, he catches the ball alright. And proceeds to throw the ball to first. Without even touching the base or tagging the runner. And I was like ... … [Read more...]

Cohabitation is a smack in the face …

Head_Meets_Desk_by_CloudRiven

... Working in real estate affords me a candid peek into different types of living arrangements, many of which are considered unconventional. You'd think I'd be used to some things having been in this business close to a decade. But I will never ever get used to the well meaning parents who casually co-sign for their children to cohabitate with their significant others. That, that right there blows my mind.I cannot even begin to count the number of bright young girls who've sat at this desk … [Read more...]

... In case you weren't aware, I loathe television. I especially loathe the T.M.I. commercials for things like erectile dysfunction medication and feminine hygiene products. It's because of the latter I may have inadvertently told my son women lay eggs. I just got so flustered. What do you say when your nine year old son asks what tampons are?I tried to handle his question with maturity, but yeah. Who are we kidding here? The Boy: Mom, what are tampons for?The Mom: Well... … [Read more...]

Where I Become Completely Unhinged…

... What is it about "rent is due on the first of each month and late after the fifth" that is so damn hard to understand?! If it's November 6th, guess what, your rent is late and you pay a late fee.Every month it's the same thing, and the same people. They come strolling in the day after the fifth and act all surprised and indignant when I tell them they need to pay a late fee. They even have the gall to argue with me about it. They pout, swear, and call me names - like mean-y rent lady. … [Read more...]

Brainwashing your children is your parental duty…

seriously

... So yesterday I had about 4 hours to kill while waiting in line to early vote. While I was there I met a lovely young black woman wearing a t-shirt that said "They stole us. They sold us. They OWE us." and I thought; gee, she looks stunning for being over 150 years old! I'm guessing she was about that age since slavery was abolished in 1865. Hey, don't let history get in the way of your overwhelming sense of entitlement.Speaking of stupidity and politics; have you ever discussed with … [Read more...]
