... OK, unacceptable is a slight exaggeration. Maybe more along the lines of "imperfect" prayer. I think most prayer is probably acceptable, except the smiting ones.Infamous for having never finished a novena, we can now add composer of truly awful prayers to the résumé. The official Church prayers are beautiful and full of sound theology. Mine, not so much. Take, for example, the prayer I typically say at my desk every morning. "Lord, I hate my job. Just get me through the day."Perhaps … [Read more...]

Prayer, Sin, and Faith…

... Someone once told me that when we are in a state of mortal sin God doesn't hear our prayers. Our sinful actions have severed our relationship with Christ and our prayers fall on deaf ears or some other such bleakness. I had always been a bit suspicious of this bit of information; how else do sinners experience conversation? I think my entire early twenties was a perpetual state of moral sin and debauchery yet there I was on my knees praying fervently for help one evening and I know He heard … [Read more...]

November …

NunsOfferingPrayers

... November is another one of my favorite months. It has everything; cooler weather, crisp air, colorful foliage and clear skies. Liturgically it’s also a very lively month.Coming off the sugar high of Halloween, November starts off with one of my favorite traditions, Dia de Los Muertos, which celebrates the holy days of All Saints and Souls Day Latino style. These feasts and celebrations form the perfect marriage of my two ethnicities.Followed by this, you have Christ the King, the P … [Read more...]

can non-Catholics pray the rosary…

... while the Rosary may be a strictly Catholic devotion that certainly doesn't exclude non-Catholics. In fact, I firmly believe that non-Catholics can benefit from the practice, so much so I recommend the Rosary to anyone regardless of religious affiliation. In 2003 I was first introduced to the Rosary, years before my conversion to Catholicism. Since then I have given away Rosaries to people suffering from insomnia, recovering in the hospital, dying in hospice, or merely struggling with … [Read more...]
