Avoid the horror of arriving to mass early…

... You know us Catholics are infamous for never showing up to mass on time. This is a gentle reminder to turn back your clocks this evening unless you want to arrive at mass insanely early and be forced to bide your time be praying the rosary or something. Image Source. … [Read more...]

Souls in purgatory…

2012-11-02_1822

... One of the saddest things I ever heard was at a funeral. Well, yes. Funerals are, by their nature, sad affairs. They are even sadder if the departed or their family aren't Catholic. They lack that whole "praying for the dead" element. At my grandmother's funeral her best friend of sixty years was overheard saying, "We can finally stop praying for her now. She's in a better place with Jesus and angels and fluffy clouds and kittens and everyone she's every loved who died before her." The … [Read more...]

Big Fat Halloween Post…

... Children. Those greedy little one percent-ers. Speaking of redistributing candy wealth; my son is having none of that. Did you know you're never too old for candy. Or Halloween. Or just being obnoxious. A huge part of why I took to Catholicism like a fish to water was that Papists love to party. We have a feast almost daily, and if you’re bi-ritual or pre-Vatican II you’ll have multiple calendars to induce ecclesiastical schizophrenia. Catholics also have an amazing … [Read more...]

Turning a Blind Eye To Domestic Violence…

... I don't like to talk about my day job, the one that pays the bills, because it's not prudent and things like that can come back and bite you. So let me be as vague as possible and hopefully you can follow along. Today there was a shooting, a domestic dispute that escalated into a double homicide. Leaving out the details about the event itself, I want to note that none of the neighbors present when the shooting happened this morning were the least bit surprised. According to their … [Read more...]

One Body, Many Blogs….

Lookit!

... I forgot to mention; I contributed to an ebook before I took my little blog fast. The project was spear headed by TJ Burdick. One Body, Many Blogs is a collection of answers from some of the giants of the Catholic blogosphere to the following question: In your opinion, what are the “ten commandments” that Christian bloggers should keep in mind while pressing on in their digital mission? Their answers are diverse and extremely helpful for anyone who shares the charism of … [Read more...]

Dear Corolla, a eulogy…

... You faithfully served me well. Eight years you & I traveled along the southern and eastern part of this great country slaughtering whole menageries of animals; squirrels, raccoon, opossums, Canadian geese, frogs, snakes, and rabbits. If it was nocturnal and in the road it didn't stand a chance under your blood thirsty hellish wheels. Good times. Good times. For 215,000 miles you carried me wherever I desired to go. Your sturdy frame protected me from harm in 5 accidents and you never … [Read more...]

A Simple Prayer Request…

... Last Friday the cutest little elderly couple came into my office. They had just rented a little place and were moving in that day. I couldn't help but notice how they treated each other - like giggly love struck teenagers. Turns out they were getting married the next day at their grandsons church and having a small reception at his house. They were positively smitten in love. On Tuesday the new bride came into my office to give us a copy of her marriage license so we could note the name … [Read more...]

... I'm sure you all have been deeply concerned to know how the Obama sand sculpture was holding up with all this rain. Needless to say, it is slowly washing away. Oh, ironies. I tried to get a photo of it last night but it was covered to protect it from further damage. There wasn't much to report from yesterday. It rained, which kept many people away, including protesters.... some are reporting the numbers to be around 700-800. Never mind that 450 of those present were reporters. … [Read more...]

... Poor Fr. Groeschel. He's 78, you know. Even at 36 I find it hard at times to fully articulate what I'm trying to convey. It happens to the best of us. "I apologize for my comments. I did not intend to blame the victim. A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible. My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be. I have spent my life trying to help others the best that I could. I deeply regret any harm I have caused to … [Read more...]

Fighting The Urge To Punch – Obama and The Al Smith Dinner …

Nicholas give Arius what for

... Look, I loathe Obama as much as the next guy. I think he's a baby hating, Kenya born, secret Muslim who holds our country in contempt. Oh, and Michelle is his "beard". Every dispicable opinion you can have of the man I hold. I've compared him to Hilter and Herod and if he invited me to dinner I would decline for fear of how I'd react if I got within arm's reach. No, I would never do grievous bodily harm to another human being but some smug mugs are just begging for a good slap. No sin in … [Read more...]
