... I've long since given up the self destructive habit of comparing myself to crafty moms, those MacGyver's of Motherhood. I've burned enough meals, killed enough plants and set enough household items on fire to know my limitations. In the evolutionary nature in which God made us humans, I've learned to adapt. It is through these adaptations that I've learned quite a few perfectly acceptable short cuts, because there's really nothing wrong with "good enough", especially when it comes to … [Read more...]

... One my favorite things about the Christmas season is the cards. I love sending as much as I love receiving them, especially since I never get real mail anymore. Just bills and adverts. As you sit down at the table with your family filling out cards why not include an extra card for the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign. The Red Cross sends Christmas cards to military troops every year through this program. Each year the American Red Cross provides assistance to more than 2 million … [Read more...]

... Brace yourself. I'm about to get all surly. If there's anything I can do well, it's being surly. And nothing, I mean nothing, gets me surlier than those daily reminders of my spinsterhood from Catholic Match that arrive in my email's inbox on an almost daily basis. Never mind that you can't unsubscribe and deleting your account doesn't work either and I refuse to change my email address... they own you forever once you join.Needless to say my foul mood was already brewing when I walked … [Read more...]

... When I was a little girl my Abuela had a statue of the Divino Niño in her bedroom. She hand-made all His clothes, little gowns and velvet capes with cold fringe. I'm not sure if you're familiar with cage styled statues. They were basically just a doll head or torso set on a frame and essentially "naked". You dressed them yourself. It was a big deal to get them all gussied up in their finest robes and cloaks on feast days.I had forgotten all about that strange little statue my … [Read more...]

Souls in purgatory…

... One of the saddest things I ever heard was at a funeral. Well, yes. Funerals are, by their nature, sad affairs. They are even sadder if the departed or their family aren't Catholic. They lack that whole "praying for the dead" element. At my grandmother's funeral her best friend of sixty years was overheard saying, "We can finally stop praying for her now. She's in a better place with Jesus and angels and fluffy clouds and kittens and everyone she's every loved who died before her." The … [Read more...]
