there’s a hermit in our hills…

about-picture

... and he's cold; very cold. Having camped in the Blue Ridge mountains area and their foot hills late into the month of November, I can attest to the frigid tempatures in the evenings.  It's 45 degrees here in Charlotte tonight and a teeth chattering 35 at Fr. George's Holy Souls Hermitage. And the temperature is only going to drop lower as fall turns into winter. Before that happens, Fr. George is hoping God will provide him with $1,500.00 for a warm stove and stove pipe. Too humble to request … [Read more...]

what does that even mean…

... I often hear people profess to not believe in marriage. How does that even work? It's not like marriage is Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny. … [Read more...]

why we all can’t get along…

Look at those Catholics, with thier tasty beer and fun.

... Custom cars, custom cell phone plans and news feeds. With just about anything being tailored made to our specific likings is it any wonder so many demand a custom tailoring of their religious beliefs? I tend to think this is why Catholicism might be too hard for some people. When a Catholic starts discussing their faith and states birth control sucks or women can't be ordained and here's why, invariably that statement is used as some kind of "proof" against Catholicism.  It sounds someth … [Read more...]

college and Catholicism…

... the only thing that kept me sane in college were my art classes and quiet visits to the Richmond cathedral next door to my dorm. I wasn't Catholic while attending college; in fact, I did not identify with any religious affiliation in my youth. As a result I spent a good portion of those years completely lost for guidance and ultimately made some very poor choices.Instead of worrying about the unchangeable past, I use my hind-sight knowledge to advise my college-aged cousins and friends … [Read more...]

southern gothic reading…

... there's nothing like a dark Southern Gothic tale on a chilly autumn night; in fact I might curl up this evening with some of Eudora Welty's writing. Flannery and Faulkner aside, who are some other Southern Gothic writer's you admire and recommend? … [Read more...]

third class relics…

"You have failed me for the last time."

... I was explaining relics to The Boy last night and we started talking about third class relics. He was particularly fascinated by the fact that you can make an object a third class relic by touching it to another relic.Apply this new found wisdom to the logic of an imaginative eight year old boy and you have LIGHTSABER RELIC [not available in stores]. He was also disappointed to learn that trying to make your own hand a third class relic will not gift you with the power of the Force … [Read more...]
