Fillion Friday…

Sigh. All I wanted for Christmas was for Nathan Fillion to follow me on Twitter. And convert to Catholicism, marry me, and father lots of children together. But that's all. … [Read more...]

I just had an Epiphany! Oh, wait. Never mind then…

Adoration of the Magi by Fray Nicols Borrs, c. 1570... As someone noted about the arbitrary nature and silliness of moving around feast days for the convenience of the laity, why doesn't the USCCB just go ahead and move Christmas and Ash Wednesday to Sunday and be done with it? This past Christmas made martyrs out of Africans traveling to midnight mass, most traveling many miles on foot at the peril of their own lives, and certain Bishops here want to move things around so Americans won't … [Read more...]

modern art that doesn’t make Baby Jesus cry…

... in the Adoration chapel of my parish is this painting by Louis Guidett.Breathtaking isn't She? At one point I sneaked in the chapel while they were still doing construction and took a few pictures with my chintzy little cell phone but the images did not do justice to the color and detail of this wonderful piece [*Posting those images from my phone would have been a crime]. So here is a detail from the artist's webpage. Guidett studied at the Lorenzo de Medici's School of Art, and … [Read more...]

little reminders it’s still Christmas…

... My co-workers hate it, but I refuse to take down the office Christmas tree or remove the Nordic Baby Jesus. I'm glad I didn't, because I need to keep celebrating just a little bit longer. See, I get terrible seasonal depression and have bouts of insomnia during the winter months. I don't care what anyone says, I am convinced beyond doubt Hell is cold. And dark. Hell is a biting cold place where you feel like you'll never be warm again or feel the sun on your face. In Hell it's perpetual … [Read more...]

don’t you hate it when you fall asleep at Adoration and no one wakes you up because they think you’re deep in prayer…

ringing in the new year and other depressing observations made from a night club…

... When they say time flies, they weren't kidding. The older I get the quicker it whizzes by so another year passing is no longer this monumental thing I celebrate. I also gave up making resolutions several years ago as a past New Year's resolution. If I screw up I examine my conscience and make my way to confession. That's my new beginning. I don't wait till the end of the year to end vices and practice new virtues.Oh, and the drunken debauchery... I never got that either. I thought New … [Read more...]
