"O God, all holy one, you are our Mother and our Father and we are your children. Open our eyes and our hearts so that we may be able to discern your work in the universe. And be able to see Your features in every one of Your children. May we learn that there are many paths but all lead to You. Help us to know that you have created us for family, for togetherness, for peace, for gentleness, for compassion, for caring, for sharing. “May we know that You want us to care for one another as those w … [Read more...]

MLK’s Prayer (for Ferguson, for All of Us)

O God, make us willing to do your will, come what may. Increase the number of persons of good will and moral sensitivity. Give us renewed confidence in nonviolence and the way of love as taught by Christ. Amen.— the Rev. Pray For Ferguson, Pray for Peace, Work for Justice

Words fail me upon hearing the news out of Ferguson, Mo., tonite. So I'll share those from the late Irish poet and mystic, John O'Donohue, and an image from my friends at Sojourners.Beannacht (A Blessing)On the day when the weight deadens on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets in to you, may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green, and azure blue … [Read more...]

On Justin Bieber’s Arrest in Miami Beach

Thank God no one was hurt in the alleged drag-racing incident in Miami overnight that led to the pop star's arrest.  But Justin IS hurt. He's been injured in a way that's worse than what could have happened in a car wreck.I had hoped he'd avoid taking this path, the one far-more-traveled-by than the one he should have taken. He can change course, right the ship, and carry on paying it forward. But he's going to need help (divine and human). It's going to take time. And he's … [Read more...]

Roger, We Will Miss You

Roger Ebert died today. He was 70.I will miss him and I am grateful to have crossed paths with him along the way. From a piece I wrote about Roger and his memoir Life Itself a few years ago:“To make others less happy is a crime. To make ourselves unhappy is where all crime starts,” Ebert said. “We must try to contribute joy to the world. That is true no matter what our problems, our health, our circumstances. We must try...I didn’t always know this and am happy I lived long enough to … [Read more...]
