… and may all your Christmases be pink! December 22, 2008

THERE’S just no pleasing evangelical Christians.
This is the time of the year when assorted godwits loudly lament the fact that nativity scenes are fast disappearing from shops and other areas – but when a high-profile tableau was enacted in Amsterdam yesterday, the laughably named Christians for Truth threw a hissy fit over the fact that the Virgin Mary was neither a virgin nor a female.

According to this report, the Mary in question was a drag queen who calls himself  “Miss Wendy”. He wore a blonde wig and high-heel black boots, while the actor playing Joseph wore black leather shorts and a silver shawl.
The five-person manger scene was staged in the courtyard of a nightclub and visitors were invited to be photographed with the group.
Christians for Truth were outraged, and asked the City Council to cancel the event, saying it made a mockery of Christian beliefs. A statement issued by the group moaned:

By portraying Joseph and Mary as homosexuals, a twisted human fantasy is being added to the history of the Bible.

What’s one more among so many? we are tempted to ask.
Frank van Dalen, chairman of the advocacy group Pro Gay that organised the Pink Christmas event, said that it sought to raise Amsterdam’s profile as a capital for gays.
Van Dalen said the event cost €15,000, or $20,800, and that it had been sponsored by the City Council. He he hoped it would become a regular attraction, as is the gay pride parade that brings tens of thousands of visitors to Amsterdam each year.
He added:

Our objective is not to be offensive. This is about visibility.

  • Gee, when they say and do things that are horribly offensive (even harmful) to others they claim they’re just “expressing their deeply held religious beliefs”. Now they want to pretend they’re persecuted? Let me get them a tissue. I think I have a used one in the trash can.

‘Christians for Truth were outraged, and asked the City Council to cancel the event, saying it made a mockery of Christian beliefs.’
Well, no one owns christianity or christian beliefs, everyone should be free to do with them as they please. When you mock a beliefs, that’s all you do – you mock a belief. Beliefs aren’t people and don’t deserve protection. Especially not those that are so old and unproven.

Quite right. Nobody owns the Nativity story, any more than they can ‘own’ King Arthur or Robin Hood. It’s an ancient legend. Christians just hate gays, don’t they? The one group they can enjoy hating openly, while talking about love.

    ‘Christians for Truth’?
More chance of ‘KKK for Racial Harmony’, I’d have thought.
Anyway, the true roots of any ‘proper’ nativity play lie in Xmas pantomime;any parent who’s ever cringed as their kid playing ‘Virgin Mary’ comes out with an inappropriate line her mum uses at home knows that.
I’m still cracking up at the video of mine slam-dunking the baby Jesus into the crib so she could go and play on the toy donkey instead.
Christians should lighten up and respect the real Xmas traditions for a change.
