Shaykh Dr Mohammad Anwar Sahib, above, has been permanently stood down by New Zealand’s Federation of Islamic Associations following video evidence of his virulent anti-Semitism.
The Federation is reported here as saying that it vehemently opposes all teachings that promote intolerance, prejudice and discrimination. Sahib was the Federation’s secretary.
New Zealand’s Human Rights Commission earlier said speeches allegedly given by Sahib were appalling and had no place in the country.
Said Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy:
We live in one of the most ethnically diverse nations on Earth as well as one of the most peaceful: this is because we are a tolerant nation.
This kind of intolerance is not welcome here in any form: prejudice against Jewish people has no place in New Zealand.
Videos of speeches delivered by Sahib, President of the At Taqwa Mosque in Manukau, have been widely viewed online.
Sahib did what most hate preachers do when they are rumbled: he complained that his words were “taken out of context” and claimed that he preaches for peace and harmony in society.
He said he had been misrepresented as a scholar of Islam and his lectures, if watched in their entirety, would show he was simply discussing history.
Sadly and falsely, I have been accused of giving hate speeches and being anti-Semitic. I wish to make it absolutely clear that I do not hate any human being regardless of their faith, place of origin, race, colour and political affiliation.
In this report, he claimed to be the victim of a “cut-and-paste” attack by a blogger.
This slander and attack is not just on me, but it is on all Muslims in New Zealand. Sadly, it is at a time when there is so much misrepresentation about Muslims in the media and this unfortunate attack is perpetuating this.
And he wants an apology.
But Shalom Kiwi revealed that in a “shocking” video containing excerpts of a number of Auckland sermons and lectures given by Sahib between April 2014 and November 2016 he repeatedly uses appalling anti-Semitic slanders and libels and denigrates women. In one sermon, he calmly calls Jews “the enemy of Muslims” and claims that:
The website added:
Jews are using everybody because their protocol is to rule the entire world.
Like his views on Jews, Dr Sahib also shares views on women’s rights that are out of step with New Zealand values. In one sermon, he proclaims that ‘no woman can dare step out of her house without the permission of her husband’.
Fiji-born Dr Sahib was trained in Saudi Arabia, receiving a PhD in Qur’anic Sciences and Islamic Studies from Madinah University.
In 2013, as New Zealand’s only Salafi preacher at the time, he led prayers at an Australian conference, which had invited other like-minded speakers such as the imam at the Great Mosque in Mecca, Sheikh Abdur-Rahman Al-Sudais, above, who said:
Read history and you will understand that the Jews of yesterday are the evil fathers of the Jews of today, who are evil offspring, infidels … the scum of the human race whom Allah cursed and turned into apes and pigs… These are the Jews, an ongoing continuum of deceit, obstinacy, licentiousness, evil, and corruption …
The Administration Council of the Islamic Women’s Council described Sahib’s comments as:
Totally inappropriate. We unequivocally condemn any divisive comments of a similar nature. While we may disagree with aspects of Jewish theology, and may have political disagreements, we see the Jewish people as closely connected to us through the Abrahamic tradition.
The Prophet Muhammad had good relationships with his Jewish neighbours and encouraged Muslims to do the same. We are permitted to eat their kosher food, and we offer them our respect. We regularly extend our hand in friendship to the Jewish community in New Zealand, and will continue to do so.
Representatives of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in New Zealand have said they strongly condemn any anti-Semitic hate speech, and say any Muslim cleric who expresses hate-filled views about other faiths or their followers must be condemned.
Said community president Bashir Khan:
Islam teaches respect, tolerance and love for all people regardless of faith, colour or background. The Prophet Muhammad championed the protection of other faiths and their rights to practice their belief.
I never like it when people try to limit their sympathy and love to their own people. I admonish you again and again to never ever limit the scope of your compassion.
