Vicious Christian mum jailed for attack on daughter October 30, 2017

Rhonda Shoffner, 41, a Pennsylvania woman who beat and tried to strangle her daughter for incorrectly reciting Bible verses, has been sentenced to prison.
Shoffner, according to this report, was sentenced last Wednesday to 30 months to five years in prison after pleading guilty to charges including aggravated assault of her daughter, who was younger than 13.

Police say the girl was forced to kneel on the bathroom floor at Shoffner’s Middletown home and repeat Bible verses. They say Shoffner slammed her head into the wall each time she made a mistake. They say Shoffner also told the child she was going to kill her and attempted to strangle her.
The girl fought off Shoffner, who told her to leave and never return. The victim then called her father, who drove her to a police station.
This report adds that Shoffner was intoxicated for days before the assault took place earlier this year.

Poor child. It is chilling to imagine the terror and pain she must have suffered. All for incorrectly reciting nonsense believed by an ignorant and unbalanced mother, brainwashed by religion, as God’s truth.

  • Arnold

Being religious is a mental illness … a mental illness so common and in such plain view as to go unrecognised as such. Most people can’t see the Woo for the Creeds.

I’m surprised the Christian Legal Centre hasn’t take up her cause. I mean, they’re always up in arms about christians being prosecuted. Or am I getting something mixed up here?

“Being religious is a mental illness …”
Religious belief is the common cold of delusional disorders.

@ phhht. I am so going to steal that.

@Arnold and @phht: well said, both of you.

OT: John Humphreys says Thought for the Day is “deeply boring.” Ann Atkins, one of the most boring, says it is brilliant.

@Broga; I can recommend Humphrys’ book “In God We Doubt.” He seems to strive to find a somewhat less strident approach to that taken up so effectively by Dawkins, Hitchens et al and provides some interesting perspectives on making your point without making an enemy. Having said that, reasonable arguments are only effective when engaging with those who accept reason…

The verses probably included neither Matthew 19:14 nor 18:6.
