Adventures of a Non-Deist, or, Why I Don’t “Believe” in the Gods

I was raised Catholic. Not very strictly, but enough to carry away a profound sense of discomfort with anything remotely connected to religion. I did kind of enjoy the music and chanting and stories and pageantry of mass, but of course in later life I understood it was a love of ritual, not a love of Catholic liturgy. I was also raised in a a family fairly in touch with nature: we hunted and fished and grew and gathered much of our own food. So when I discovered neo-paganism in graduate school, … [Read more...]

BEAUTIFUL CREATURES, now on DVD.

movies-beautiful-creatures-still-3

I know, I know, it'a fluff. I don't care, I loved this movie! An old family of Louisiana witches faces a battle with their town when the local Christians think the "new girl" is too witchy to be at school with their sweet little Jesus-worshiping Mean Girls. It's full of wonderful performances: Emma Thompson as a neurotic Southern Baptist whose body gets inhabited by an evil witch--LOVE THAT! Jeremy Irons as an impeccably-dressed reclusive millionaire whose … [Read more...]

LORDS OF SALEM: cool look and vibe

peg lords of salem dress

Have you seen it yet? I want to see it again before I write a review, but my first response was that I loved the visuals and the vibe of the film very much. But I did think there were some weird holes in the plot and some poorly written dialogue. Still, it's worth a look. I do wonder if Mr. Zombie might consider working with a screenwriter to address these problems; I think he is a world class visual auteur but the films just don't hold together very well, which is a shame.Oh, and I loved … [Read more...]

Disney bows down to BRAVE fans

disney-brave-merida-disney-princess

This astute blog post from a media studies professor (yes, there are quite a few of us out there!) shares an update on the Princess Merida brouhaha: Disney has pulled the 2D image of the new version of the doll from their website, most likely from the negative media blitz and petition with over 120,000 signatures saying we all prefer our archer princess without the turquoise eye shadow and push-up bra, thanks. The Christian Science Monitor weighed in with a piece that went directly to the … [Read more...]

BRAVE New World? Sigh. Nope, Same Old Sexist One.

Photo of doll in Disney collection, from Fanpop website

As some of you are already aware, I loved BRAVE. I thought it was artful, smart, funny, moving, and above all, a wonderful improvement in the representation of female characters in animated films. It was also unabashedly pagan in its imagery and worldview. But with every Disney movie eventually comes a line of toys, and there's already been some controversy with the planned release of a Princess Merida doll that is being referred to as a sexed-up version of the tomboyish character. I Googled … [Read more...]

Interview with Arana Fireheart, featured on WIFE SWAP

The Fireheart family, from Salem, Mass.

Tonight's episode of WIFE SWAP features a pagan family living in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Los Angeles-based parents of a tap dancing prodigy. I happen to be acquainted with Arana Fireheart, husband of tonight's pagan mom Karina Fireheart, and asked if he'd answer a few qustions via email about what it's like to "represent" the pagan community on one of TV's most popular reality TV shows. Of course WIFE SWAP Has featured pagans before (at least once paired with Evangelical Christians), and … [Read more...]
