BRAVE New World? Sigh. Nope, Same Old Sexist One.

Photo of doll in Disney collection, from Fanpop website

As some of you are already aware, I loved BRAVE. I thought it was artful, smart, funny, moving, and above all, a wonderful improvement in the representation of female characters in animated films. It was also unabashedly pagan in its imagery and worldview. But with every Disney movie eventually comes a line of toys, and there's already been some controversy with the planned release of a Princess Merida doll that is being referred to as a sexed-up version of the tomboyish character. I Googled … [Read more...]

Interview with Arana Fireheart, featured on WIFE SWAP

The Fireheart family, from Salem, Mass.

Tonight's episode of WIFE SWAP features a pagan family living in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Los Angeles-based parents of a tap dancing prodigy. I happen to be acquainted with Arana Fireheart, husband of tonight's pagan mom Karina Fireheart, and asked if he'd answer a few qustions via email about what it's like to "represent" the pagan community on one of TV's most popular reality TV shows. Of course WIFE SWAP Has featured pagans before (at least once paired with Evangelical Christians), and … [Read more...]

Feliz┬áDia de Los Muertes! The Samhain season last a few days, with the Mexican Day of the Dead and All Souls Day today, and the cross quarter (when the sun enters 15 degrees of Scorpio) arriving November 5th. I hope you are all letting this time of reflection work positively for you; certainly it is a time of stress and anticipation, with a major storm having left parts of the Northeast USA devastated, and the presidential election just a few days away.If you want to help victims of … [Read more...]

Pagan Media News, Samhain Edition! (Part One)

The-following-poster

There's plenty of interesting and exciting media news this Samhain season. Perhaps most interesting is that Samhain itself, or Hallowe'en, is not being covered quite so fervishly in the news as it has been in recent years. Why? Are we finally become part of the culture and no longer "special"? Was our brief tournee as media darlings enough to make us boring? Or is there something sinister afoot? Hmmm. But despite that, I have seen a few interesting news stories, like this one from the New … [Read more...]

Pagan Pride Day NYC

Hello readers! I've been remiss in posting for a while, owing to starting a new job on top of my already full schedule of teaching and my cottage industries. I hope to be able to post more regularly once my landscaping business goes dormant for the season. It's great to be busy though! Just wanted to give you a heads up and let you know I will be speaking at Pagan Pride Day in New York City this Saturday September 29th. The event takes place in Battery Park and there's all kinds of workshops … [Read more...]

Witchy Media Notes (Blue Moon Edition)

MovieQuiz_960-

As we get ready to leave August and enter September, that "back to school" feeling is of course being enhanced by all of the hype around the coming presidential election, as well as some powerful astrological activity that's been brewing for weeks. Today is also a Blue Moon, or the second full moon in a calendar month: a fairly rare occurrence and one believed by some to be potent and magical. There are a few developments in media-related news this week. The latest news in Arkansas … [Read more...]

PARANORMAN Review (We Have Met the Bully, and She is Us)

8C40-D002-00230

Norman is a lonely small town kid who seems normal in every way, except for the fact that he sees dead people. Oh, wait that was another movie. No, this one is about a kid who is bullied and has no real friends but ends up becoming a hero to his whole town. No, wait, that was that other movie. Anyway, Norman's mom and dad and snotty teenage sister just roll their eyes when they hear Norman taking to his dead grandmother. Kids at school write "Freak" on his locker and shove him down the hallway. … [Read more...]

Trailers for Paranorman

I've been loving all the trailers for Paranorman. Most of them try to give the classic "go see this quirky coming of age movie that will be great for kids and grown ups alike" kind of vibe. Then there's this Olympic themed one. I particularly like this one with the mumbling zombie (with subtitles), known simply as "Movie Guy." Geez, I really am looking forward to this. Negative premature reviews be damned! I have not read any of them yet, though. Watch this … [Read more...]

New Releases and Premieres: PL3, Kill List and Paranorman

paranorman

This week sees the release of a number of DVDs that many pagans and pagan-friendly folks will want to have in their collection. Most significant is the release of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory. This third film in a trilogy ties up the story of the West Memphis Three, although it did not intend to do so (hence the title. suggesting an unsure outcome). The film's premiere at the prestigious Toronto film festival was a version that did not include the release of … [Read more...]
