The only thing worse than a witch hunt…

Still from WGN's new series SALEM premiering April 20th

...is a television series that tries to capitalize on popular media's witchy trend by being as over the top as possible.SALEM Premieres this Sunday on WGN: Just how trashy will it be?From the looks of things in the latest trailer, pretty trashy.I'm pretty sure this series was in the works before AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN premiered, but I am inclined to agree with the i09 folks: this new show seems to want to give the glossy, envelope-pushing FX drama a run for its … [Read more...]

Welcome to the Twenty-First Century Satanic Panic

Satanic Ritual Abuse. Hey, didn't we figure out more than a few years ago what a crock it was? Didn't the West Memphis Three case and the Lanning Report and those ridiculous episodes of Oprah! and Geraldo! make it clear that it was a crazy decade-long episode of hysteria?Well, unfortunately there's a whole new generation of gullible people who haven't been exposed to the debunking, and a whole bunch of trouble-makers who want to spread these insane rumors all over again. Welcome to the … [Read more...]

Just-Released! Behind the Scenes Preview of SALEM

Salem-Trailer

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I might actually be looking forward to this...Just released: special behind-the-scenes footage and sneak preview of WGN's Salem which premieres later this spring...Yes, the story set-up seems a bit silly: young sexy versions of Tituba, Cotton Mather, and other historical figures from the Witch Trials, setting us up for the suspicious, hysterical madness that takes place near the end of the Seventeenth Century. But the production values do … [Read more...]

AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN: What We Loved, and What We Hated

AHS_1_9_12_13

And by "loved" I mean REALLY PASSIONATELY ADORED.And by "hated" I mean WTF?????Lilith Dorsey and I had nearly weekly video chats about the show, half rant, half rapture. Because, as irritating as we found the show to be at times, we also found it very entertaining and compelling. Say what you will, it is hard to remain indifferent to a show this intense. But its flaws were every bit as dramatic as its charms. So, without further ado:LOVED:1. The Dialogue. It was often perversely … [Read more...]

And then there’s the ROSEMARY’S BABY mini-series…

rosemarys-baby

Yeah, that.Well, at least it's not the dreadful sounding adaptation that Michael Bay was planning to do with Jessica Alba and Doris Roberts (hooray for all the fans who shared their outrage and effectively killed this project); they'd even been planning to change the title to "The Sacrifice."This mini-series version is directed by Agniezska Holland (who recently worked on the excellent American TV adaptation of THE KILLING which was a Danish series), and written by James Wong (from … [Read more...]

Here for your pleasure and delectation, another installment of our weekly video chats about AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN! Lots of fun things to talk about this week, including the opening credits, what's happening with Queenie, who the Next Supreme is likely to be, why we really love Myrtle Snow, and the truly evil Madame LaLaurie...Check it out and share! … [Read more...]

Ten Things You Now Know About Witches, if you watch AMERICAN HORROR STORY: COVEN

american-horror-story-08

1. Witches have really nice clothes. No, seriously. Designer shit. Expensive nice togs, impeccably tailored. Unless you're black, in which case your clothes are more likely to be cheap, ill-fitting and garish, unless you're Marie Laveau and have been pillaging rich white bitches' wardrobes for 300 years. And if you're an older witch, your style may be a bit eccentric or old-fashioned, but your duds are still of excellent quality.2. Witches utter insanely clever dialogue. To wit: "Can … [Read more...]

New show on WGN “Salem” is a love story, with witch hunters…

salem_article

Or something like that. The excellent horror media news website Bloody Disgusting has been providing some good updates on this show that is set to premiere soon on WGN America. In their latest article they offer a video teaser portraying some dunking chair style torture...in an apparently sparkling swamp (the scene was filmed on location, oddly, in Shreveport, Louisiana). The series is slated for a thirteen episode season to premiere sometime in spring of 2014.The production design is … [Read more...]

2013: The Year of the Witch?

kolchak12

It's been a helluva year for witchy-themed media, mostly on TV. I'm working on a round-up of all things witchy from the year just past, and looking at things coming up in the coming year, to be posted in the next day or so.I'd love to hear from any and all of you, in the comments section, any thoughts you have on any witchy media you enjoyed (or hated, ha ha) this past year, particularly if you caught something that fell beneath my radar.I do already have a prediction for 2014: the … [Read more...]
