Welcome to the Twenty-First Century Satanic Panic

Satanic Ritual Abuse. Hey, didn't we figure out more than a few years ago what a crock it was? Didn't the West Memphis Three case and the Lanning Report and those ridiculous episodes of Oprah! and Geraldo! make it clear that it was a crazy decade-long episode of hysteria?Well, unfortunately there's a whole new generation of gullible people who haven't been exposed to the debunking, and a whole bunch of trouble-makers who want to spread these insane rumors all over again. Welcome to the … [Read more...]

Oh, look! Witches are media darlings. AGAIN. (SIGH)

craft circle

Remember the late 1990s? THE CRAFT? Then CHARMED? Then BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER? Then THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT? Then all the witchcraft stuff appearing in episodes of shows like THE X-FILES, MILLENNIUM, etc.?To quote one of the creepier moments of TWIN PEAKS: "It is happening again. It is happening right now."Just in time for Hallowe'en. Heh heh heh. Thanks to The Guardian for pointing out what should have been gradually becoming obvious to most of us these last few weeks. American Horror Story: COVEN Reinvents the Witch Archetype

American-Horror-Story-Coven-poster-06

The Media Witch has been bewitched. No, I mean that. Two episodes into this season on American Horror Story (COVEN) and I am enamored of its slick arty look, its take no prisoners daring, its outrageous disregard for history, and its shameless envelope-pushing. I mean, hey. Why have a hot television show that’s not at least somewhat controversial?I know, as a media critic and practicing witch and activist, that I am supposed to be overtly critical of media portrayals that trumpet the “ … [Read more...]

COVEN: American Horror Story’s witchy new season

american_horror_story_coven_cast_a_l

By now you've certainly heard that the third season of AMERICAN HORROR STORY is subtitled COVEN and will be set in both Salem, Massachusetts and New Orleans, Louisiana. As last season's ASYLUM was set further back in time than the first season, this third season goes back nearly three hundred years in its quest to fill an hour of primetime with more sex, gore, violence and perversion than we're generally used to seeing. And I, for one, can't wait. The first "teaser trailer" has been … [Read more...]

Interview with Arana Fireheart, featured on WIFE SWAP

The Fireheart family, from Salem, Mass.

Tonight's episode of WIFE SWAP features a pagan family living in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Los Angeles-based parents of a tap dancing prodigy. I happen to be acquainted with Arana Fireheart, husband of tonight's pagan mom Karina Fireheart, and asked if he'd answer a few qustions via email about what it's like to "represent" the pagan community on one of TV's most popular reality TV shows. Of course WIFE SWAP Has featured pagans before (at least once paired with Evangelical Christians), and … [Read more...]

Cult Occult Films…Occult Films About Cults? Occult Films with Cult Followings? (Head Explodes)

Season of the Witch

From the excellent website and blog AV Club, I found a thoughtful review of a little-known and seldom seen 1972 film by George Romero called Season of the Witch (also known as Hungry Wives). AV Club's Keith Phipps says, "It’s loaded with references to the occult, but owes as much to Betty Friedan as Anton LaVey." It does seem to be addressing the subject of the occult via the lens of "women's lib" and so might be worthwhile, given the dearth of films from that period which tackle the subject. A b … [Read more...]
