Shocking Abuses Uncovered at Tyson Pork Supplier (heartbreaking – you can help!)

Warning: Contains Graphic Footage. Undercover video footage at “Wyoming Premium Farms” revealing egregious cruelty and filthy conditions at a Wyoming pig breeding facility owned by a supplier for Tyson Foods. The following video is one to be watched with discretion. This is truly heartbreaking and another example of the ways in which Americans degrade creation that God declares to be “very good.”

The Humane Society of the United States released undercover video footage revealing cruel treatment of animals and inhumane conditions at a Wyoming pig breeding facility owned by a supplier to Tyson Foods. The investigation revealed workers kicking piglets like soccer balls, swinging sick piglets in circles, and ruthlessly beating mother pigs. Along with individual acts of animal abuse, this investigation also highlights the suffering pigs endure when locked in metal “gestation crates” where they cannot even turn around for nearly their whole lives — a standard pork industry practice.

Burger King, McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Safeway, Compass Group (the world’s largest food service provider), and other major food companies have announced, at the urging of The HSUS, that they’ll remove gestation crates from their supply chains. As several leading pork producers are actively moving in that direction, Tyson lags far behind and still defends this extreme confinement. We need your help to move the company to do the right thing.

Will you please help pigs by urging Tyson to stop allowing them to be confined in tiny gestation crates?

Christian Leaders Speak Out Against Cockfighting Cruelty

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FROM THE HUMANE SOCIETY

Christian Leaders Speak Out Against Cockfighting Cruelty

The Humane Society of the United States commends Dr. Oran Smith and Dr. Richard Land for ground-breaking new video

The Palmetto Family Council, based in Columbia, S.C., received praise from The Humane Society of the United States for the release of a strong video criticizing cockfighting. The blood sport is widespread in South Carolina because of the weakness of the state’s anti-cockfighting law and consists of roosters fighting to the death while spectators gamble on the outcomes.

The Palmetto Family Council is tackling the issue head-on in a new video that features Dr. Oran Smith, the executive director of Palmetto Family, as well as Dr. Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s ethics and religious liberty commission

Citing scripture and Biblical principles, Smith and Land expose the cruelty of cockfighting as well as the larger societal effects of the illegal blood sport.

“Religious leaders had a founding role in the humane movement in the 19th century, and today in the 21srt century, they remind us of our solemn responsibilities to other creatures,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “Their voices can help guide the nation toward better decision-making and behavior when it comes to our treatment of animals.”

“There is no question that the Palmetto State is now the “go-to” location for animal fighting on the Eastern Seaboard,” said Dr. Oran Smith, the executive director of Palmetto Family. “As a matter of state pride, we must strengthen our laws now.” [Read more...]

When Worry Disrupts God’s Cosmic Community of Care

I want to introduce you to someone.  Her name is Sadie.  After six months of marriage to Lauren, she started asking if we could get a puppy.  After months of hesitation… I gave in.

Why the hesitation?  Because I didn’t want the responsibility of caring for an animal.  Chores like giving a bath or cleaning up puppy fecal matter didn’t sound like a good way to use my time.  Add to this the financial burden of vet bills, food, and my personal allergy issues – and the cost of caring felt like a big deal.  I’ve got enough to worry about in my own life, not to mention the mutual care of my wife.

And what I found is that my suspicions were partly true.  She’d leave surprises on the carpet.  Eat stuff.  Teethe on furniture.  Yelp for hours if she was left alone.  Taking care of Sadie was hard work.  But work that would prove worth it.

The little pup grew on me, so much that I eventually pushed to get a second dog.

We named her Mylee.  Not only did the idea of having indoor dogs grow on me, but caring for Sadie and Mylee brings me joy.  Its like the community of care in my household: God’s care for us all, my and my wife’s care for each other, and our care for the pups – helps me to become more fully aware of God’s creative love.

The more I care for the pups, the more I get glimpses of the way in which God cares for me. It’s as though we comprise a small community of care that mirrors God’s cosmic community.  The Sermon on the Mount gives us a broad horizon for learning to find our place in this cosmic community… teaching what it is to follow Jesus into our vocation as image-bearers.  With this in mind, let’s read a section of this sermon starting in 6.25: [Read more...]

What Would Happen if Science Proved Cows Literally Love Jesus? (Quote to Ponder)

“Research could prove that cows love Jesus, and the line at McDonald’s drive-through wouldn’t be one sagging carload shorter the next day.”
