If Evolution is Right… Then What About Adam? (Option 3: My Option – "Agnostic" about Adam) [3 of 3]

This series wrestles with the questions of the compatibility of Biblical theology and biological evolution.  To understand my view of Genesis 1, you may read here as that chapter will not be discussed in this series.  Also, check out this series by RJS at Jesus Creed.  The rest of this series, go here (in the first post, I present an option of Adam being historical) (in the second post I explore the idea of Adam being a parable).

Of the two options that we explored in this series, it is honestly difficult for me to choose a perspective.  Could Adam be historical? Yes!  Could Adam and Eve be more parabolic? Yes!  I think that both of these options are indeed consistent with historical Christian orthodoxy. [Read more...]

For most evangelical Christian readers, the following perspective will be a bit more difficult to embrace, as it challenges some inherited beliefs about the historicity of Adam and Eve.  A word that has raised eyebrows when included in discussions of biblical interpretation is: myth.  An initial response to this word is that it seems to indicate that something is untrue.  If, for instance, Adam is simply mythological, the logic follows that we cannot be sure of any claims in Scripture.  This is an extreme jump because it completely ignores issues of literary form and historical context.  If we believe that the form and context in which God chose to inspire a sacred text matters, then asking questions about the historicity of Adam is not unreasonable. Many Christians feel that Adam and Eve must be held as historical for the authority of Scripture to remain intact.  Some wonder – if the first couple is not “real” then could it not be said that other parts of the Bible are mythological as well? For those with this concern, I propose that it is completely feasible to still believe that they are historical while also being open to evolution.  Categories are not mutually exclusive.

According to John Stott: “…my acceptance of Adam and Eve as historical is not incompatible with my belief that several forms of pre-Adamic ‘hominid’ may have existed for thousands of years previously.”[1] He goes on to explain that it is perfectly logical to assume that many human-like creatures not only existed prior to Adam, but developed cultures, made “cave drawings,” and “buried their dead.”  [Read more...]

The Evolution of Mothers Day OR Cheesy Anti-Scientific Christian-ese

So what do you think?  If you read this blog on a regular occasion, you probably know what I think :-)   The sign is clever and quite honoring to moms, but the attack on science makes Christians look anti-intellectual.  Its time to move beyond this debate and allow the Scriptures to form an accurate worldview free from our preconceived notions about truth.  For more on Evolution and the Bible, click here.
