Simplicity and the Subversion of Subtle Idolatry

During the 46 days of Lent (well, in actuality my family celebrated the Resurrection on Saturday so we chose to feast with them then [45 days]) food often filled my thoughts.  Attempting to live on $2 a day meant that I craved Chipotle on a regular basis and wished that I could eat desserts and snacks that always seemed to be in the kitchen of our office at work.  One of the worst situations at work took place during a baby shower that was thrown for a staff member during lunch.  Foot-long pulled beef sandwiches!  Nope, just water and the gurgling of stomach acids.

What I found through the hunger pains, the bad moods, and the cravings was a God who purged me of my desire for things other than him.  Certainly, this purgatorial parenthesis in my otherwise consumptive life did not take full steps toward perfection as one might hope, but refinement certainly happened. On Tuesday this week I participated in “One Day Without Shoes” that was sponsored by Toms Shoes.  Basically, well, as the title suggests… you don’t wear shoes – anywhere!  So, to school and work and the store, ect… barefoot.  By the end of the day my feet were raw, dirty, and needed to be cleaned. "Failure Reminds us of Grace During Lent," Simplicity in the Burbs ($2 a day) [Day 15-16]

Failure.  I failed.  It was unintentionally, but nevertheless, I failed.  My goal for Lent has been to stay under $2 a day with my food and any extra expenses that may come up.  And yesterday when I hit the auto-sum button on my Excel spreadsheet, I realized I had topped the scales by $0.08.  I truly was bummed but then I began to think of the character of God.  If my goal is to appease God, then I am missing the point.  And if my goal is to prove that “I can do it” or some other ego driven piety, then I miss the point.  [Read more...]
