@8e2489e8e6d41f2f43624c99aa8ca30e:disqus ... your distinction is almost right, but not quite. Pete views the Adam story as the older of the two creation stories... predating the exilic period. It functioned as a "wisdom" story, and in its final form as an "Israel" / exile story. I wonder if you read the review I wrote for his book the "Evolution of Adam" yesterday. This video was connected to that particular post. The article you list in your comment only scratches the surface of Pete's view as it is laid out in the book. Here's the review and consider reading the book. Its really quite excellent. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/thepangeablog/2012/02/02/evolving-with-enns-reflections-on-the-evolution-of-adam/

I think it's important to note that Enns' point is that Israel came first and Adam was written later to incorporate what they knew to be true about themselves as primordial history. Adam is a posthoc story about the nation's history, not humanity in general.
So then Israel is Adam, NOT Adam is Israel.

I like this. I'm slightly more conservative then Enns, I think, when it comes to dating certain portions of the OT (which is simply to say that I think more of the Torah can be considered older than many scholars would accept), and I don't locate quite as much in the exile as he would. I also was taught a covenantal understanding of Gen 1 - entities on the first three days were put under the "rule" of entities on the second three days, all of whom were put under the rule of God on the Sabbath. This provided Israelites a covenantal logic to creation, etc., tying what Yahweh was doing in their midst to Yahweh's cosmic acts of creation. I learned this from a fabulous teacher with a PhD from Harvard (in the 1990s), but I know many scholars would disagree with her.

Of course, all this is also why I'm in theology and not biblical studies proper...

I found out about Mumford and Sons through thesixtyone.com. Awake My Soul was the first song I heard of theirs and I jumped at the chance to get the album. It's a fantastic example of story telling and a real sense of emotion that I think is lacking in a lot of music today both Christian and secular. One of my favorite albums.

I think that anyone who thinks things through for themselves will never fit neatly into a category unless it's one they've invented themselves. And possibly not even then! Not just in the field of religion, but politics, music and any other time there are several schools of thought or styles.

Why should 'conservation' of nature and natural resources be seen as a left issue and opposed by 'conservatives'? How did they end up on opposite sides of the fence? Likewise how much sense does it make for abolishing abortion but supporting the death penalty, or abolishing the death penalty but supporting rights to choose abortion, to end up as part of the same package of beliefs? My intention is not to spark debate about these issues in particular, just to point out that sometimes beliefs get packaged together that shouldn't necessarily have to be taken wholesale. As a skilled user may choose 'custom' settings when with installing new software on a computer which make more sense for them, a skilled thinker (or at least someone thinking through their beliefs themselves) does not have to adopt the default beliefs of a group of people, although they may hold many in common with that group.

Oh, and the cumulative effect of pretending that belief and science can co-exist peacefully? A national disgrace in science standards. Thank goodness we can fill the university science programs with Indians and Chinese who actually know science.

My question is, why are you okay with the US becoming a second rate country in education? Is your respecting religious belief worth it to the generations to follow? I don't think so. I think you're failing your in your civic duty.

I agree with this idea. I was first introduced to it in book, "The Evangelical Universalist", by Gregory McDonald, which uses the idea of Adam as Israel in Exile as a major building block for his thesis.

I agree. Luke and Acts are almost certainly two halves of a whole. It is a shame that the traditional book order for the New Testament breaks up the two.
