Did I Die? Let Me Count The Ways

By now most of you must have heard the leaked tape where Donald Trump explains to Billy Bush that he often kisses women without permission and grabs them by their genitals as they both die with laughter at how funny that is.I was pretty upset about that tape, but not because I am a prude or even that I am shocked that men talk like that. When Billy Bush says "will you give him a hug" while holding back giggles, I remembered all the times that I was the girl who was the butt of jokes between … [Read more...]

Will We Let Fear Win

“I plead with you--never, ever give up on hope, never doubt, never tire, and never become discouraged. Be not afraid.” ~ St. Pope John Paul IIYesterday I wrote a piece for Aleteia about the shootings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile being a pro-life matter. I explained my personal experience of fear when getting pulled over by police officers as a Hispanic woman. I wrote it hoping that people would read my words and not add all the other words and rhetoric of the day to it. I was … [Read more...]

Happiness in a Depressing World

I kept reading people's opinions about the Stanford rape case to the point of having my nightmares come back. I have been in therapy for about three years now and haven't had many nightmares about what happened to me as a child and later in life for a very long time. Something about hearing people talk about what it's like to be a victim of sexual assault/abuse just brought those nightmares back.I laid in bed one night with tears streaming down my face and asked everyone on my friends list … [Read more...]

Bathrooms and Pedophiles

I don't care who can use what bathroom, if you let your child go into a bathroom alone, you're an idiot. I don't let my 14 year old daughter go into a public restroom alone. There is a reason why women go to the bathroom in groups, because that's the safest thing to do.I was raped as a child by a mechanic, pedophiles come from all walks of life, trans people taking a leak are the least of my worries.Women also abuse children sexually and men in men's restrooms have killed … [Read more...]

The Anger that Looks Familar

I have a lot of opinions on politics which is not really surprising to anyone who knows me or reads my Facebook or Twitter updates, which is why this morning I couldn't pull myself away from my computer screen as the news of Trump's Chicago rally came rolling in. As I watched footage from the chaos, I recognized something.  My anger. It was like seeing that old friend from long ago who you went to jail with and decided you could no longer hang out with because they were a bad influence on your … [Read more...]

The Restlessness of Fear

I am taking a Called and Gifted class at my parish on Thursday nights which is a part of our Jesus is Lord/Adult Faith Formation course. I wanted to take this class for many reasons but mostly, I am having a faith crisis. I am extremely angry at God at the moment and I am exhausted spiritually. I felt that taking this class would help feed my spiritual life.I have been going to this classes for about 5 weeks now or so and every week I have left feeling angry and hating it. There are a lot of … [Read more...]

Trump Tapped What Was Already There

There is a hidden issue in the debate about illegal immigration. A lot of good people are either unaware of it or ignore, but it is real. There is a really thread of racism against Latinos/Mexicans/Hispanics when it comes up. As long as I can remember, I have been able to see it. I am a Hispanic who has lived in Texas my entire life, I have seen it in my family and been the target of it.Now Drumpf is leading in polls and winning primaries based on his views about illegal immigrants and his … [Read more...]

Where are the Gates of Hell?

In Matthew Chapter 16 verse 19, Jesus said "You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it".  It seems like there are some people who seem to either doubt Jesus' words here or don't get that in the same breath that he said "you are Peter (the first Pope) and upon THIS rock, I will build my Church (which is the Catholic Church), He also said "and the gates of hell will NOT prevail against it." {Emphasis mine} I don't really understand … [Read more...]

Fourteen Years

14 years. Wow. 14 years ago I was married to Ben 8 months pregnant with my last child and on my way to work at Hooters when the first plane hit. Ben and I were fighting about getting the kids ready and Regis and Kelley were on in the background. We both noticed that something was going on and stopped what we were doing to figure out what it was. Slowly the news of a plane crash started coming in and then the second plane hit and then news of another plane hitting the Pentegon. The confusion of … [Read more...]
