Monday Morning Muse – Taking A Break From Reality

Monday Morning Muse – Because Even When I Can't See Straight Or Breathe Without Chemicals, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead.I'm still unwell. I know, I know - I should be offline and working on getting better. Remember the old days? Didn't matter if you were missing a leg, it was more important to get the job done: “What if you were sleeping?” I had stupidly asked. “So get up and answer it,” she’d answered while filing down a scraggly nail. “Sitting down to a really fancy meal?” “Be like every other Ne … [Read more...]

I COULD Just Scream, But Instead I’ll Promote Science – XOJane Health Column On Birth Control

I don't want to do any kind of nasty, mean-spirited post about the news over on Gawker - Ranting Lady Blogger Hates Birth Control, Only Uses Plan B.Of course, it's caught the attention of a few sites you might read already (like XO Jane's Health Editor...are you playing with me? by Scicurious). The article in question is a column called "GET IT TOGETHER, GIRLS: EVERY GODDAMN PHARMACY IN NEW YORK IS OUT OF PLAN B! EVERY ONE!"What I will say is that apart from the casual attitude regarding Plan … [Read more...]

Sunday Morning Survey – ‘When’s The Right Time To Announce You’re A Young Atheist?’

Sunday Morning Survey – Because On A Morning This Nice It's More Fun To Stretch Your Brain Than Stretch The Spine Of A Hymn Book.Firstly - hat-tip to the very kind Digital Cuttlefish who has blogged about the Phiten necklaces in Prime Time Superstition and gave a hat-tip to my blog-post on NRG TitaniumION Bands.More importantly, as mentioned by WWJT in his recent blog-post, Digital Cuttlefish once wrote about Jessica Ahlquist, in a blog-post called Fox News Commenters Hate America. Young peop … [Read more...]

Another Donors Choice Project Completed For Science!

My Project: Last year we did an animal research project. Every child had a different animal. As a first year teacher last year I didn't have much of any materials available in the classroom to learn about an animal of interest. I checked out books from a couple local libraries in our city and brought in stacks of books. The kids were so thrilled. For the following two weeks they couldn't wait to continue reading and continue their process in their research project. If I could have more … [Read more...]

Halloween Horror Science And Getting Inked By A Lab-Squid

I've been meaning to write about this week for a while - and since I'm now heading into the city this morning in order to do my third session of volunteering this holiday break (before starting school again on Monday), now's as good a time as any. Besides, it's the first time I've sat down and unloaded all the photographs off my camera so I actually have something to show you. SCIENCE!This is what you get up to in the CSIRO lab with a bunch of kids aged around seven to nine, when they're … [Read more...]

Because I Love You – The Princess Bride (In 2011)

I remember the first William Goldman film I ever saw - Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I ended up studying it as a Media student at university. This, however, remains one of my favourite films and books, let alone works by Goldman - and I've been fortunate enough to teach and recommend both to students. Enjoy this if you know what I'm talking about and click to embiggen. This one is for Kathy. … [Read more...]

Politics And Anti-Abortion Efforts On BOTH Sides Of The Pond – On H.R 358

If you're a follower of #EveryThingIDo, you may have noticed that there's a Token Skeptic podcast interview with the articulate and community-minded skeptic Liz Lutgendorff, who along with Carmen D’Cruz started a counter-campaign in response to the '40 Days for Life' called 40 Days of Treats.I've submitted an article to the UK Skeptic based on the interview, so hopefully it'll be out next edition (and you can find out for yourself by subscribing to their fine publication! REALLY good bumper iss … [Read more...]

Zombie Attack? Never Fear, A Hardware Store Is Here To Help…

I know that the task of advertising a hardware store might not awaken one's creative muse easily... but this is bloody funny. Er, so to speak....and there's the zombie take on it:  Westlake has been a valuable resource throughout the zombie awakening with zombie preparedness experts, tools for defense and zombieproofing and now zombies are gathering outside the store in protest. … [Read more...]

A Peacock For Bridget

Bridget recently posted this and it cheered me up when I needed it (mostly because I'm still a little sad for Digital Cuttlefish, and we're all still seeking donors, of course). Here's a video in return, since peacocks are cool. There's no sound for it, because at the time there was large booming clashing construction work going on in the background over at the UWA Club. Mind, the sound of a peacock is hardly the most melodious thing to hear either, but I would have focusing on admiring the … [Read more...]

Late Thursday Links – Singh Asks Sally To Prove It And Talking Science To Kids
