Ireland Revising Abortion Laws

A little while back I conducted an interview with the Skeprechaun Podcast, called Episode One Hundred And Forty Six – On Savita Halappanavar, where I asked some questions about their Skeprechaun episode #33 called “For Savita”. Both episodes contains potentially distressing content, as we both talk about the death of Savita Halappanavar.

News today from the Sydney Morning Herald:

DUBLIN: Ireland will legalise abortions when the mother’s life is at risk, including when suicidal, following the death of a woman refused the procedure while undergoing a miscarriage.

…The government will repeal the legislation that criminalises abortion and introduce regulations setting out when doctors can perform the procedure. This will be when a woman’s life is regarded as being at risk, including the threat of suicide.

The Irish Health Minister, James Reilly, said the government was aware of the controversy surrounding the issue, but the safety of pregnant women had to be ”strengthened”.
“I know that most people have personal views on this matter. However, the government is committed to ensuring that the safety of pregnant women in Ireland is maintained and strengthened. We must fulfil our duty of care towards them,” he said.

A few responses online, mostly critical – the Telegraph’s Cathy Newman with “Ireland’s abortion law is virtually meaningless”:

Of course, the story wasn’t quite as interesting as the headline. What Ireland is proposing is simply to pass legislation to allow abortions where a woman’s life is at risk. Far from a new departure, this simply implements a court ruling which should have been enshrined in law two decades ago.

Ireland announces abortion law reforms, leaving no one satisfied – Yahoo, claiming that pro and anti-abortionists are both going to be unhappy with the ruling.
