Zombie Attack? Never Fear, A Hardware Store Is Here To Help…

I know that the task of advertising a hardware store might not awaken one's creative muse easily... but this is bloody funny. Er, so to speak....and there's the zombie take on it:  Westlake has been a valuable resource throughout the zombie awakening with zombie preparedness experts, tools for defense and zombieproofing and now zombies are gathering outside the store in protest. … [Read more...]

A Peacock For Bridget

Bridget recently posted this and it cheered me up when I needed it (mostly because I'm still a little sad for Digital Cuttlefish, and we're all still seeking donors, of course). Here's a video in return, since peacocks are cool. There's no sound for it, because at the time there was large booming clashing construction work going on in the background over at the UWA Club. Mind, the sound of a peacock is hardly the most melodious thing to hear either, but I would have focusing on admiring the … [Read more...]

Head-Desk Your Horoscope

When writing a horoscope, it is best to get oneself into the mindset of an astrologer. Therefore, I'll be firmly smacking my head on the table before writing each sign. To establish my authenticity, I will make spiffy, symbolically meaningful logos for every sign. Here's Taurus:(Cute isn't he? I like the ring in his nose.)Taurus the Cow - Don't. Just don't. Put it back in the box, call the exterminators or your local council and turn yourself in now. You'll be doing yourself and the … [Read more...]

The 360 Degree Bike At SciTech!

I volunteer at this Science Museum. Because they are freaking AWESOME.Tomorrow I'm dissecting squid with some kids and I'll post about that and the Halloween Science CSIRO lab sessions from Tuesday as well. :)We've gone a bit loopy at Scitech -- literally -- and are putting the final touches together on our awesome new exhibit -- The 360 Bike. Unlike conventional bikes, this one doesn't ride on a flat surface, but a 360 degree loop. In this clip you can see our brave Science Squad Manager, … [Read more...]

To Google + Or Not To Google +?

Okay - bear with me with this one, as it's certainly dismissible as 'Well, nice to have problems of only this magnitude, sheesh...'.But do you feel the same? Is it possibly just 'a female thing', as posed by Phil Plait in a quote that follows this? Social networking is useful for getting in touch with other secular and skeptic people. I can't tell on G+ whether all the people adding me are those kinds of people. Some people I know are definitely secular/skeptical, but I don't know them well en … [Read more...]

Felicia Day And Sean Austin With ‘Behind the Scenes: When Galaxies Collide’

Many thanks to Gold for this find! :)Felicia Day explains some of the science behind galactic "collisions," including the upcoming collision between the galaxy Andromeda and our own galaxy, in this mock behind-the-scenes look at the making of a NASA educational video. Very impressive. :) … [Read more...]

Tim Minchin And Dennis Kelly’s ‘Matilda’ TwitterView

Okay, sure, not STRICTLY skepticism, I know, I know... but I do love Roald Dahl, especially when combined with the songs of Tim Minchin. Here he is with the writer Dennis Kelly, answering questions about 'Matilda', the musical that was transfered from the The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) Stratford-Upon-Avon's theatre to the West End. There will be an iTunes release on the 18th October coinciding with the musical’s first preview night. You can check out more of the musical (the London p … [Read more...]

Iszi Lawrence With Ladylike Lessons: How To Put Your Face On

I saw Iszi perform in August 2008, as a part of the Camden Fringe - and oddly enough, ended up being on the same train as her after the show. I don't recall her make-up being particularly note-worthy, but her tales of her family during her show were well worth catching.Notice in the background, a sketch depicting the main characters from Léon: The Professional.httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsgUdPGXUZ8 … [Read more...]

Brave New Rationalist Bookshop – Art To Celebrate Embiggen Books’ Grand (Re)Opening

Dear C,Remember that little local artist's painting I sent you back in 2007? The one that's small enough to use as a coffee-mat, that I got from one of several folders that were full of plastic sleeves and original sketches and paintings? Assorted art that the artist didn't seem to want hanging around? Remember how I told you that the artist won a freaking Oscar this year?PLEASE put yours in a frame now...Love, K.Yes, the picture is one of many that feature in the windows of Em … [Read more...]

Just For Laughs – UFO Prank

This is one of the things that my research looked into - the likelihood of UFOs having visited earth. Results? Not that much of a difference in comparison to international belief in aliens (for example, one survey reported a 15% belief in abduction by aliens out of a sample of 8000 in the UK, 1997). Hopefully if firm evidence of alien contact DOES happen on the side of the road, people don't get the giggles at the poor clucking, crashed creatures and their smoking spaceship... … [Read more...]
