God Compares the Soul to Four Things

by Tony Jones on January 24, 2010

Today’s entry in Incandescence:

God compares the soul to four things:
You taste as sweet as grapes.
Your fragrance is as intoxicating as balsam.
Your radiance is like the brightness of the sun.
And you’re the maturity of my most sublime love.
The soul always follows a rare and excellent path, and she draws the senses after her in joyful obedience.

“The Flowing Light of the Godhead”

I love Mechthild and “The Flowing Light.” Her writings are super interesting.

It’s a shame she’s not referenced more often.

I have just discovered Mechthild of Magdeburg. What wonderful words of hope and exuberance!

And after 6 decades of confusion, struggle, dismay with Christian religions, unfortunately in the fundamentalist vein, I have discovered the leavening joy of Creation Spirituality.

Mechthild, along with Hildegard of Bingen, Meister Eckhart, Matthew Fox bring unparelled joy to my senses.
