Who Is Shane Hipps?

Well, he’s the guy who will be the lead teaching pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, Michigan when Rob Bell leaves that post at the end of this year.

He also happens to be one of my best friends.

Shane was in my brother’s class in high school, so he was around the house a lot.  At least one year, I was his counselor at church camp.  Then, in the late 1990s, Shane moved back to Minneapolis after college and we spent much time together.  In fact, Shane was the very first person to read the first draft of my first book.

Shane went on to Fuller Seminary, to pastor a Mennonite church in Phoenix, and to write a couple books in the years before he landed at Mars Hill.

Now, Shane’s sermons are downloaded by a couple hundred thousand people a week, and he’s got a slick new website where you can watch his videos, read his blog posts, and generally learn more about him.

I’m thrilled for him, and I think Mars Hill is in great hands in this time of transition.  Listen to one of Shane’s sermons, and I think you’ll agree.

That’s interesting to know. As one of the people who subscribes to the MarsHill podcast, I actually look forward to Shane’s teachings the most.

I read Flickering Pixels earlier this year. One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. Congrats to your buddy Shane.

After reading Rob Bell’s “Love Wins” I am coming to realize that you guys are popular among certain groups of Christians, and are good public speakers, but that you really are not competent in your profession as it relates biblically.

You blasted a Baptist book/Ph.D. dissertation for not being up to standards for a doctorate, but you look at Bell’s writing and regardless of the books theological conclusion, it’s crap. Bell draws information out of passages that isn’t even there.

And, Tony you seem to be on the side of ignoring content of passages that are there. If you were to take ideas that elite pundits find vogue, your biblicism is hand in glove.

I don’t know the trajectory of your ideas when put into practice, but my guess is that you will be off the reservation and into other religions at some point in the future.

Ignoring the uncharitable and uninformed nature of your comment, I would like to address one point: A book written towards a PhD should be asked to stand up to more rigorous standards than a book by a pastor who is not gaining academic achievements for it. To suggest otherwise is just blind.

Ignoring your pious argumentum ad hominem nature of your response to me, I agree that a PhD dissertation should have rigorous standards, Joey. But I guess low standards and errors for laymen books is alright, especially when they deal with a core foundational element of your Christian faith.

Hope the money is worth it.
