Interview with Atheist Ireland, Talk at The Irish Catholic tonight

dublin talk

Tonight, I'll be out in Donnybrook to give a talk, hosted by The Irish Catholic on "Having Better Fights about Religion."  If you don't have time to make it to Dublin, it looks like the talk is going to be livestreamed through iCatholic (7pm in Dublin), and I'll post a link to the video (presuming it exists) after the fact.Earlier this week, I also sat down with Michael Nugent of Atheist Ireland for a casual chat (which turned out to run about an hour and a half).  I've embedded the videos of … [Read more...]

A new forum for Catholic/Atheist dialogue

strange notions

Brandon Vogt, author of The Church and New Media has opened a new site called Strange Notions, that's meant to be a forum for debate and discussion between Catholics and atheists.  For some reason, it seemed like the readers of this blog might be interested.  Here's how Brandon describes the site (and explains the name): StrangeNotions.com is designed to be the central place of dialogue between Catholics and atheists. The implicit goal is to bring non-Catholics to faith, especially followers of … [Read more...]

Good thing you all keep fighting even while I’m moving

rockem_sockem_robots (2)

I really like it when my blog becomes a kind of backdoor pilot for spinoff conversations on other blogs.  A conversation in the civil same sex marriage thread spun into a dialogue Irenist and Jake over at the former's blog (Marginalia).  There are three posts in the series so far.In the first, Irenist responds to some of Jake's comments and questions about how religiously motivated a law is allowed to be. The U.S. was designed not to have an institution like the Church of England. That’s all … [Read more...]

Head to Head with Hemant Mehta

Last week, I got to do an interview/argument with fellow Patheos blogger and Friendly Atheist Hemant Mehta on Justin Brierley's podcast Unbelieveable!   You can stream the podcast from Justin's website or you can download it from iTunes.  This is probably my favorite media thing I've done so far, since I find it easier to express myself in the context of an argument than I do in the scope of a conventional "How do you feel?" interview.  It's easier to realize when you're not being clear when you … [Read more...]

Camels with Hammers has a rebuttal

He's a writer at FreeThought Blogs and has been engaging pretty respectfully (without sacrificing aggression!) with me and my ideas (as gleaned from posts and comments).  I particularly appreciated the post he did excoriating my some of my atheist friends for claiming atheists can't be moral realists.  That's a fight I tried to start in the atheist blogosphere when I was one, and I'm glad he's carrying the banner. Now, he's got a new post up, with the amusing title "In Which I Answer Leah L … [Read more...]

Debate with Justin Martyr [Index Post]

debate rostrum

In June of 2010, I had a debate with Justin Martyr of the now defunct blog The Faith Heuristic on the topic "R: The Evidence Supports the Existence of God."  Unfortunately Justin has taken down his blog in the interim, so his parts of the debate are lost to the winds of the internet.  I've collected my posts below, and I think you can still piece together most of the arguments.Rebuttal to Justin (Part 1) - Justin began the debate with Kalam's Cosmological Argument and I reply by talking a … [Read more...]

Invite Me to Debate!

This is my debating power suit

In case two posts on strategy for debates on religion wasn't hint enough, I'd be very game to argue with people offline.  If you're part of a religious or atheist group that hosts speakers, I'd love to come and give the other side what-for.  I'm happy to speak at a student group or a church or pretty much any venue.  (I managed to get into a religion debate during an ASL lesson, clearly I don't require much). As readers of this blog know, I'm a really weird atheist, so you won't just be he … [Read more...]
